OK so what sucks about the Zip Zap MT?

General discussions, new info, and all stuff that's how you say, off the hook. Bit, ZZ, SE, MT, SS... as long as it's micro, it's here.

OK after reading these past few posts about changing steering motors I had to get to work on my HULK MT, so I remember that I had once ripped apart a twister stunt car with hardwired motors, I never got to use the motors and so I had to dig through my stuff and find it but they are yellow endbell motors if that means anything.
Anyway I took out the stock MT steering motor and it's fairly shorter than the normal Bit motors, but anyway I cut some wires, etc. then soldered the twister stunt car motor in place of the original one.
Steering wise, the turning radius is not really a difference, a major difference in performance though is that it turns faster, I like it better than the stock motor and umm well it does drain the MT batteries just a little, not much though.
MT's though for anybody who doesn't have one yet, they are the best micro RC cars Radioshack has ever made, at least in my opinion.

OHH and the reason the HULK Chevy truck has putty on the side is, because I took off the hulks arms on the body, and put putty where the gap was and then sanded it down and getting it ready for new paint job.

good point. since there is no steering pot on the mt's, the steering motor just stalls out whenever you make a turn. the more torque the motor has, the more it's going to drain the batts.
This patch of dirt out front of my place is all the enticement I need.

You can see where I keep it swept out for my off road bit adventures. Notice the nice set of whoopties the run off from the roof makes.
i don't think you could purposely make ruts better than those. looks like fun, but that might be uncharted territory. not sure how many of us who are raving about the mt's have actually taken it out in the dirt. (i know i haven't). let us know how it does.

Sacrilege!!!

Well, I had a good shopping day today...My woman dragged me along to help her shop for a new winter coat, but I was the one that ended up bringing home stuff, hehe that's a first.

Got my hands on a new Mach I Mustang SE, Vette P&P, and an MT Wheel/Tire set. Not too shabby.

I haven't really had time to run in the dirt yet, so mine was on smooth wood floors and tile.

I find that the turning radius is extremely bad on rugs. I also took the MT on a small pit of small rocks and pebbles, and it did ok. Then I tried to drive it over grass, but it's too weak to move. It definately needs better suspension and a new steering motor.

Look...these things aren't going to perform like a Mini-z Monster, Overland, or Rockbuster. So, if that is what you are looking for, you are going to be disappointed. The suspension, for all intensive purposes is similar to a standard ZZ suspension and it doesn't have gobs of ground clearance (although it is quite a bit more than a ZZ or bit). But...for a 1:64 scale truck, it can climb over stuff I would not have thought it would handle. You have seen the richh vids where it climbed over all kinds of stuff and ran up a ramp that a regular ZZ could never handle. His vids have also shown how they can climb a wall because of the decent amount of torque they have. The bottom line is they are tourquey with 4WD, and a little extra ground clearance... which adds up to a whole lot of fun. Plus, they look pretty damn cool for a bit. They are also put together pretty well.

Mine has run over all kinds of crazy stuff on my desk. My favorite thing to run it across is stacks of magazines. It has even run over a lamp base on my desk that is about 3/4 of an inch deep. When I run it with the orange setup, its fun to get it up to speed and launch it off of the beveled wood transition between my hard wood floor and tile. It lands pretty squarely and tends to stay upright.

The manual says not to run it outside and to only run it on clean, smooth surfaces...heh, heh. I think it would handle Dave's patch of dirt with the woopties with no problem.

I'm far from the expert on internals with rc's, but I don't really thnk the steering motor is the problem with the wide steering. I really think it is because the 4WD is pushing the truck in a nature that causes the front wheels to lose some traction in the turns. This seems to be amplified on rugs and carpet. Payaso has a good point with his diffs comment. No, I haven't run mine in dirt yet.

It isn't the first warranty I've voided, and it wont be the last.

Oh hell yeah, it better!

My offroad bits run fine out there, and they're nothing more than bits with offroad looking tires, stacked FETs and 12:1 gearing. Ground clearance is not an issue when I sweep it out so there's no pepples.
...crazy man, crazy...dig it.

I'm thinkin sand gettin caught in the gear mesh. That would pretty much end it for me. I still want one regardless. I've got a few ideas for mods in the ole dome.

Well getting sand caught up in the gears could be a problem....and I'll say this ....getting the front end back together after you have it apart is a serious pain in the ass.

That's true, but figure a monster truck has to run in a small stadium. ;)

If it turns within a foot I'll be happy, beyond a 12" steering radius, I might be upset.

Damn, 4 more hours until RS opens.
