OK so what sucks about the Zip Zap MT?

Alright I've been wanting one of these, my local RS finally got them in. I get paid on monday. So I gotta wait one more day, and with everyone so happy with theirs, I'm about to crap my pants with anticipations, so before I get too excited, someone talk me down, what's wrong with these?
So far we got the faster motors lack torque, but Hog has shown that FETs, or at least one of ph2t's Biffs will fix that. So that's not a problem.
Then there the squealy noise I heard you guys mention. I can deal with that.
There's the obvious lack of ground clearance, but several have said that's not a problem.
So what else is there? Is there anything that might really piss me off?

so far my only complaint (and it's not really that big of a complaint) is the turning radius. seriously, i think my mini-z's have just about the same turning radius as my zzmt's (if not smaller).

I saw today in my RS, nice knobby tires kit for the MT.
and they had the Hulk MT.

I have to agree with rich, the only real downside so far is that the turning radius is not so great. It seems that the 4wd pushes the front wheels a bit at times. This seems to be more noticeable on some rugs. I justify this to myself by saying....its a monster truck, I don't need it to handle like it is on rails. I want it to climb over stuff and launch itself off jumps....It does. In addition, mine seems to turn a bit tighter in one direction than the other, but I can live with it.
The ground clearance doesn't appear to be all that great for a monster truck, but its quite a bit more than your typical ZZ or bit and it doesn't seem to have much trouble climbing over things....which is the biggest draw for these things in my opinion. It actually looks like you could trim the pins coming off of the bottom of the steering knuckles to give it a little more ground clearance if needed.

There's really no way around the wide turns without a differential. I'm guessing since I don't own one, that they are lacking diffs? Same in any scale with solid axles.

You are correct in your assumption....no diffs.

Well glad to hear that in advance, I get a little irritated with cars that make wide turns, but as it was said, it is a monster truck, and it's not like I'll be cramped in my tiny kitchen like with a bit.
I think Payaso is right about the lack of diffs being the issue. Bits compensate for that with a suspension that causes one of the rear wheels to lift in corners, but with 4WD and big grippy tires, there's not much else we can do about that, is there?
Maybe some ingenious mofo will devise 4 wheel steering, like a real monster.
How hard can that be?

yea, in a funny way the torque and increased ground clearance help to compensate for the big turning radius; you can just drive over many of the things that with a bit you would need to steer clear of.
i did notice the front wheels seem to turn more left and right when you hold the truck in the air than when it's sitting on the ground. also on some surfaces i can turn tighter driving in reverse than going forward. (reality check here, doesn't it take less oomph to turn trailing wheels as opposed to leading wheels?) it's almost as if the stock steering motor doesn't have enough torque to fully turn the wheels when driving. anyone recall what the "torqueiest" motors are? usually torque decreases with rpm, so maybe a tomy 1.0 or 1.6 transplant would help.

That's a good observation there, rich. I think you're on to something.
I would have to think that FET modding the steering would have to help, but swapping the motor is not a bad idea. I swapped out the green endbell hardwired motor in a SE for a white endbell motorworks motor and the steering became really fast and responsive. I have a blue endbell hardwired motor from one of them Desert Tornado Hummers that's even torquier but not as fast as the Motorworks motor. I think that would be a good choice, but I'm already thinking bigger.
I'm wondering if there's enough room to hardwire a big ol' fat Superslicks motor in there. Can you get me a pic of the area around the steering motor?

Yup, turning radius is definitely the only non-plus thing about the MTs.
But you can compensate for it (a little) by letting off the gas going into the turn.
I know this is supposed to be a talk the MTs DOWN thread, but man I still gotta say the fact that you don't have to worry about the surface you run these on, nor if the surface is clean? That is just friggin fantastic!
I've got an SE that's basically out of commission until I clean out the hair (I've got a dog) from the front knuckles and it's in there so bad the only way I'm gonna be able to clean it is to take the thing apart.
With the MT, I could probably shave the dog down and ride the shavings all day long and even if it did finally muck up the driving, the wheels come right off for easy ass cleanin.
...And once I get my mini-wagons, we'll see what all this no-torque yappin is all about!

Man namuna, can't even be negative about that thing for a sec, can ya? I don't need anymore enticing.
This patch of dirt out front of my place is all the enticement I need.
You can see where I keep it swept out for my off road bit adventures. Notice the nice set of whoopties the run off from the roof makes.

ok, i just thought of something... if you're running stock gearing, or possibly even one of the hotter motors, then anything to decrease the turn rad would be beneficial.
but... and this is a big but... tricell and/or fets + high cg + non propo + sharp steering = zzmt on it's back evrytime you turn
.

Hmm .. It sucks that you cant get them in Denmark..
Heck, i want one as much as you guys do!
