Unopened collectables...

... do you open them, or leave them sealed?

I just got the Calsonic Nissan from the RCMod contest. I had every intention of opening it from the beginning. I need a 45mhz bit controller.

But then when it was in my hand I got to thinking, "Say, isn't this like a limited edition collectable?" I know I seen websites that were selling them, and they went for quite a bit more than other bits. I thought for just a moment, it might be cool to have a sealed in box collectable around.

I thought about it for 5 whole minutes, and then I went ahead and broke the tape and pulled it out to play with.

Ultimately, I want the cars to play with. Since I don't plan to ever sell it, and I didn't invest any money, I don't care about resale in the futur. The real value here, to me, is to get to play with it.

Really I hate the whole collectable toy market. Toys are for playing, not collecting.

Whach you think?

I agree, but i dont think it's a bad idea to maybe keep one packaged up for when ur older, and when bits arn't around anymore. I'v never collected anything, i dont see any fun in it really. So, i'd just play with the stuff, and have fun.

Yea I can't seem to keep stuff in their boxes either.
Gots to take it out and play a little bit at least.

I could see why people do it, and it's kinda cool they do because way down the road, we'll probably still be able to score a new, fresh outta the box bit. lol

But, usually collectables take a long time to appreciate, especially toys.

Yeah, thank god some people have more will power than I do, and have every intention to sell at a later date.

... but now that I feel ike I have a a full set of Bit Char-Gs in all the frequencies, maybe it'll be easier to leave my next score in the box. I do have a collection of boxes that I thought were interesting.

That's what I'm saying, and what's valuable 20-50 years from now, we'll never know. For all we know almost every Calsonic Nissan will be saved, meanwhile say like the Skyline set, maybe those will be rare because every one bought them to have the extra bodies to mod. You just don't know how it's gonna work out.

I know these litited eddition bits may be worth more as times goes by, but IMO CD ANY of your custom bits would hold a higher value years down the road. Now those are really rare. This is why I have a small collection of pimps rides. Not for resale, but as a collector and admirer of your work. Speaking of wich, when are we going to open up the auction block again? I have a feeling we will see record sales this time around.

I have Collectables, many of them but I also have plenty to play with (too many) so it all evens out for me. I sometimes get 2 of everything, 1 to lay & 1 to play.

I have very few collectibles for the same reason as Dave. I want to play with them. If I had to look at something like that sitting on a shelf, I'd go nuts. (or I'd play with it and seal it back up)

Here's my opened box collection. Not sure why I'm saving them, I think maybe for historical reference, when explaining bits to future generations. I got a LXX box in there, as both a historical reference t clones, and because I'm sure that the gibberish on the package will be funny for years to come.

I would have a hard time leaving an RC in the package. Now if it were a really rare piece....like the Voltz DT picked up recently....I might be able to leave it be. But for the most part RC's should be run.

I actually have a small collection of diecast cars....mostly 1:64 scale. The diecast I collect have opening hoods with little detailed engines and even a detailed and painted undercarriage sometimes. Pretty amazing detail for 1:64 scale.....and I like to bust them out of the package so that I can pick them up...open the hood, and admire them from all angles. I do have a few pieces still in the package, but those are typically two car dioramas....and I like the way they look in the package.

RC cars differ from diecast cars because they actually do something....they have motors....they "go" and you can steer them. They are not meant to be display pieces only....you gots to bust 'em out.

I keep my boxes too. I actually went out and bought a big plastic tote with a lid for my boxes. I always get a big kick out of the toyeast Perfection boxes and their broken english that doesn't make much sense...definitely collectors items

I save my empty boxes too.

In my defense though, I keep em so I can use them for shipping or the plastic for modding.

That Voltz will never be opened. I wanted to bid on the 2nd one but gave my word I'd back off, and someone else got that shit anyways

I got out bidded on 4 funk'n AM sets, the last by 14 seconds and a couple ID sets, they weren't really that rare so my bid wasn't too high. Trying to get hold that ever ellusive Nakamichi Hummer. Did anyone ever find dem suckas ???

I'm with DT and cj, if you plan to keep something for a while...Buy 2 (if possible).

For me, this mentality is a leftover from when I was addicted to buying comics...It started with buying singles to read, then I started buying 2 at a time (1 to read, the other went right into the special plastic bag). And at the height of the obsession I was buying 5 to 10 at a time depending on whether or not I thought it would be a good 'investment'.

Once I came to the realization that I wasn't buying the comics for the pleasure of reading them anymore (not to mention the insane amounts of money I was blowing) I quit cold turkey.

So nowadays I pretty much take everything out to play with (even if I think it'll be worth something someday)...But I also make sure to KEEP the original box and anything else included (stickers, manuals, etc...) cause there's still value in selling something that's been open if you have ALL the original stuff with it.
