General discussions, new info, and all stuff that's how you say, off the hook. Bit, ZZ, SE, MT, SS... as long as it's micro, it's here.

My Microsizer just came in

Post by MaxximumRC »

My Microsizer just came in. The first thing I did before I ran it was open the controller up and take the charging stand off and put it on my peak charger. It works great, the charge time is about the same, but it gets long runtimes, not sure how long though, but atleast 5 minutes, with a 3.0.

awesome - I think you'll see nothing but improvements on your times.
You should nab a 160 mah bat or higher, then you'd be running all night long like lionel richie! 8-)

I need to do that to several of my controllers, I hate those flimsy wire ones.

What peak charger are you using?

MaxximumRC, I think your chargeing your battery at too high a current, and it's false peaking. You should be getting runtimes much longer than 5 minutes. I use my volt meter to watch for voltage drop, to detect peak. This is not as accurate as a peak charger, but with some practice, I've gotton pretty good at it, and I get to know certain batteries, and what they liketo take.

Anyways, I'm getting 20+ minutes runtime with the stock 50mah battery, a Bit Char-G Motors 3.2 and Perfection 3.8s.

Check this thread at TRC where tinyrc was reporting 30+ min. runtimes with the stock cells.
http://tinyrc.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=3458
It was never determined conclusively in that thread, what was a good charge rate. Some said 500mA would be too high, but I think that what my AAAs are putting out, and that seems about right, because I get good punchy long runs, and with over 20 runs on some of my batteries, I've not notice any decrease in performance. In fact, when i got a new batch of 150mah cells, the old ones that had been properly cycled, actually take a higher voltage while charging, and are punchier. Chargeing with AAA it usually take 3-4 minutes to charge stock cells, and about 7-8 minutes to charge 150mah cells.

Here's a thread of mine at TRC, on peak chargeing with your volt meter that may or may not help you.

Does that charger have a trickle charge mode?

Last Pirahna charge I saw charged at a fixed rate of 2.5A, that's way too much. I had an Astro Flight 115D Digital Peak Charger when I raced 1/10 scale, and it was adjustable from 1A-5A, but it had a trickle charge mode to use when batteries flase peaked, or were in storage, and that charged at 500mA. If your charger can be adjusted down to 500mA, or if you have a trickle charge mode, I seriously reccomend using it.

Try the trickle mode, and let me know if that helps your runtimes. I'm curious myself

I was a little worried about your battery, but since it's a peak charger it should shut down before any damage is done.

What voltage are you chargeing at?

At any rate, I'm just trying to be helpful. When you said it was at least 5 minutes, my first impression was; That don't sound right, it should be more like, 'Jesus, will this thing ever die!?', as the Energizer bunny rolls by.
