An Old Newb Finally Joins the Pimps (long post, some pics)
I've had ZZ since they came out in '02, joined TinyRC because they were the best at the time, got clones, lurked there, got MS, did stuff, everybody left Tiny to come here, got out of micro RC for a while, ZZ-M came out so I got back into it, finally gave up on that dead place since everybody came here already...
I've done a couple projects, nothing too killer though. Got a long way to go before I can hang with the talents here! Dual cell, tripple cell, dual motor, fighting SE's for Propo...ya know, the usual. Got a fairly decent size collection of cars now. Right now I'm working on a couple ZZ Silverados (Desperado 1&2), gathering stuff for an articulating ZZ-M, and starting to copy the hell out of a project someone else did.
Blah blah blah, let's kill off some bandwith now!
My first real "project" was a Clone into monster with jacked suspension, springs...Uh, well, the hobby was young, and BettyK hadn't come up with the DirtyBit yet. Probably won't show. -Edit you can see it, but don't pick on me too much-
Got a ZZ-M and suddenly having 4wd and the ability to drive more places in my house got me back into this, even though I'm not all about trucks. Cool and all, but needs to look like a *REAL* truck, not a poser truck that's only good in a stadium. I grab the leftover Chebby Silverado (Ram was part of G/F b-day present) because I don't really like the body, so who cares if I fuck it up! It's practice, and if I make it cool all the better!
So, buy a new monster to the chassis I add: a lead-tape skidplate, crawlerbox, long travel front suspension, softer springs, and a very minor shave of the pcb cover. The body, I get a bit more involved: Ditch tonnau cover for a full bed "rhino lined" for visibility, give it a roll bar, ditch front bumper for a decent looking winch bumper, build a brush guard, rock sliders, recovery points (Not shown yet), and a semi-working winch (not shown yet either still in progress), gave it a little trail rash but still needs a bit more.
Next body I'm working on at the moment, I went a bit farther, but not sure where it's going to end up. Maybe a rock crawler, maybe a beater, maybe shiney new, whatever. I decided black didn't photograph well, so I was going to do another practice silverado in a better color. My paint stripper of choice doesn't touch that paint, hell if I've gotta sand and prime anyway, it's getting body mods! It's getting a bed, headerpanel being reworked toward more of a Ford Lightning or maybe a 70's dodge if I get pissed, and probably a bunch of other stuff, I dunno. If ya got any brilliant suggestions, hit me.
No pics yet on others, I'm being lazy. Anyway, you're bored and I'm tired of typing, later.

Ditto to all that - hell of a first post.
Welcome to the hood.

Dear Life Cereal, Where do you get off? Part of a balanced breakfast and delicious? Who do you think you are? By now you may have guessed I'm speaking ironically and have nothing but good things to say about what you do. Life cereal do not change a thing.

Thanks for the warm greeting. Yeah sorry, I forgot my BBS manners, my first post after joining should have been "Hyeeia, hou doo i duelal sell my kar?" followed by my next post of "my cat's breath smell like catfood." then ofcourse "hoW dues me put purdy pikz off mah kizzar no here" I'm sorry, I really should remember to act like a newb if I'm gonna be one. I'll try to do better!
Glad you like the trucks so far, I'm more used to working on 1/24 models but these are coming along. Gotta find out what these things will/won't let me get away with. The black silverado I was calling "Desperado" as a joke (Desperate for a cool body, stuck with a Silverado), it's mostly done except for the winch, maybe some junk for bed, and mud/trail rash. Despite having the bed, and winch it still carries full lighting.
The single cab Silverado shouldn't need much more than a little stripping, touch of dremel work, a tiny bit of filler, and some careful masking to become a Lightening. Oh and ofcourse fixing those Ugly-Ass Flares. Ok, it probably won't really, but it'll be harder to figure out what it once was. I'm thinking maybe like Blue or Grey base color, with graphics I haven't decided on either.
Haha, yeah. Altoids, for The Originally Celebrated (secret to) Curiously Great Oral The ginger is a bit stronger than I care for, but had to try them. I just needed a prop to climb that would let me show off my winch some, that was near the top of the pile on my desk.
Let's kill some more bandwidth, I don't really feel like giving these the credit of a seperate post.

so where do u get the shocks fer ur suspension? ive been trying millions of um and all are too darn stiff for any articulation. also does only having front suspension have that many more advantages over none? i really mean can u tell if it rides smooth as a cadilac compared to a go-cart?

Uh. I have no shocks. My springs are from a pullback sandrail/dunebuggy that I've had almost forever, part of it's gearbox broke pretty soon after getting so I never got to play with it anymore, went to my shelf for years, found it again. The springs ended up being like 1/8" longer, but they're soft enough even with the preload it's still noticably softer than stock. I wish these were softer though, it takes about 60g or so to get them compressed. I didn't try these out before I did long travel mod, so no idea how it would affect stock. Climbing is SO much better after both of these though!!!
Yes, having front suspension is better than none, but full suspension or articulation would be ideal. What do you have that's go no suspension? I have zero articulation, and my front suspension travel is somewhere around 3/16" but I don't feel like measuring. Ride quality is probably a little better, though NOT MUCH, the chassis weight doesn't partially compress my springs, I'm not sure how much of an improvement on ride smoothness it is, I'm not 1/64 scale. Being able to shift weight easier did give me a tighter turning radius though, but I did it for travel so it could climb more. It is afterall a truck, and if I'm not going to use it as a truck, I'll drive a car.
