I've been waiting for the day when me and my kid could race RC cars together, and he's 5 now, so he's starting to get the hang of it, but he still has some issues. So we have demolition derbies and drag races.

He's got his Charg-N-Go '57 Chevy wanna be, and that's the only car he'll drive, fortunatly it performs very well. He was bugging me all day Sunday to play with him, but we all got distracted. So first thing yesterday morning, I got ready to race with him. I was thinking with his almost a '57 Chevy, and my '57 chevy, it would make a pretty cool old school demolition derby vid. So layed out my foam mats on front porch, and I was setting up the Superslicks walls, when the little boy from across the way came running over. He's almost 5 and him and my kid are like best friends now, even though he speaks little english, and they can't understand each other. He was asking, I assumed, what I was doing, in Spanish, I was telling him "race cars". He pointed to the cars on the Superslicks box, "race cars?". "Si, race cars". He got excited and started jumping up and down.

So I figured, I'd let him play after me and my kid went a few rounds, I took one lap, and his eyes lit up, then his hands went out, I'm like, fine, I guess I can share my toys.

So him and my kid went at for about 15 minutes, they both sucked, so I didn't bother getting any footage, but it was worth it. After they were done, I went and picked cars that were in 3 frequencies, so I could play too. 2 Skyline race cars, and one lowered, FET modded, Tiny RC Formula 34 motor'd, flame jobbed one for myself. As soon as I brought them out, he saw my flamed Skylined, and yelled, "Oh Cool!". He was pointing to the flames asking what they were, I told him, "Fire, en fuego". Then he's like, "Me me me". So fine, I let him take my car again, but I went back for my flamed Supra, with the Perfection 4.2. I found out the Tiny Rc motor ran circles around the 4.2, and the Supra body flipped alot on the foam mats. He hit the throttle, and that Skyline flew off the track. He went off on a slew of spanish I did not understand, but I caught, "muey rapido" in there. So he was definately impressed with the speed.

The lesson to the toy companies, even a 5 year can appreciate a faster car that doesn't look cheesy.

So that turned out nothing as planned, but I think it may have been more satisfying. Thought maybe someone would appreciate that, its not the kinds of race story we usually tell.

Cool story. Man, you're a lot more generous in that situation than I'd have been... I'd let the kids drive crappy bodies only, with crappy controllers, on the crappy track... for 5 crappy minutes tops. Nah, I'm not that bad, but still... I'd have a hard time handing the FET-modded car to a 5yo. And I'd miss out on the cool experience, too.

LOl@ Sessiz. Luckily my kid never went through that stage. At first he'd push them and say vroom vroom, like a Hot Wheels car, and that frustrated me, "No use the controller". Then he'd drive into a wall and pick it up, and that frustrate me, "No stop picking it up, you got to drive it.". Then he'd just go back and forth, hit the steering button separate from the throttle, and get mad because it wouldn't move. That was the most frustrating thing, took a whole year to make him understand he had to hold both buttons at the same time, and that where we're at now. whew.


@ Hue, yeah you know, it was rough, especially when the Skyline took that first dive on the concrete. I flinched, but his reaction was great. he really is a cute kid.

It was fun, but a different kind of fun. Not what I would have expected. He'll be hooked for life now. When he saw us come home today, he ran inside to bring out his new toy, a big ass ATV. It's funny, the controller is too big for either of their hands.

I'm not sure how I'm gonna handle taking my Iwaver out front now though. He's gonna want to drive that, and I can't afford that.

I bought my kid a big ass tyco monster truck to play with. It's kinda cool and it was cheap, like $10 cheap.
He's got the steering thing down (had the same thing goin as with your kid dave) but just lacks the intrest in driving it. My son is a freakin game freak. He's on the gamecube most of the day and when we go out or some shit he's playing spiderman on his gameboy. I've started to nip that in the but though.

CD its cool you would take the time to share the fun with your son let alone a neighbor kid that is just way too cool! Man my respect just soars for ya man (even if you do pick on bratty 12 year olds)!

@Sessiz, Yeah we've had to nip that game playing crap in the butt, it gets out of hand real fast. Now he's got his own computer, so at least he's playing educational games now.

That's cool, Dave. Kinda reminds ya that these are toys, even if you have 80 hours of time wrapped up in one.

I just cashed in on that amazon/toysrus SuperSlick deal (3 for $11, shipped) and ordered the Incredibles vehicle for my daughter. I'm gonna make a "Violet" decal and put it on it before I give it to her. It's her 5th birthday next week, so I think she's just getting to the point where she'll be able to control it enough to drive around the kitchen with me.

I couldn't find that 3 for $11 deal, but I did just score me the rally subie for $5. Thanks for the tip Superfly.

Well, it was the car at $5.29, and the deal where if you bought two you got a third one free by entering some code that it gave on the page. And then they all had free shipping.

great story dave....I wish my daughter was still into micros as much as she was a few years ago. Now that she's 12, music and boys have taken center stage in her life. Occasionally, she'll pick one out for me to customize for her to display in her room, but that's about it. Definitely ballsy to hand that kid one of your prized sleds....Not too sure I would do the same, but that was a generous thing you did for that kid. I'm sure he'll remember it for a long time to come

while i aint no dad, i do apreciate the joys of watching kids learn. simple stuff like cracking eggs or buttering toast can be hilarious!

Good story Dave. It's like little children can do no wrong, so pure. I let this girls toddler play with my Xmod at school today. He was having a blast.

I totaly agree, from experience; my mom would do that shit to me and my bro when we were smaller, shortchanging us. Now we have more issues than Time Magazine.
