4WD puzzle
Here's a puzzle-like project I started for the Year End Blowout, but never got it finished.
I am trying to make a fully custom 4wd bit sized car/truck.
I originally set out to make a 4wd bit sized touring car, but it sorta started to head towards a truck.
I have some guts and parts from a....
-ZZMT
--dog bones
--chopped front end
--driveshaft
--front axle
--gears
SS motor or a ZZMT motor
ZZSE servo
Wheels from a model quad
GE lexan for the chassis.
E-tec 80mah lipo
I have the ideas worked out and the general set-up, but its the size and compactness thats screwin' me up right now.
I don't think I'm going to be able to keep the size down. I think its going to end up being closer to a Superslick sized ride. Maybe slightly smaller by and inch or so.
I was thinking to cut a hole in the lexan chassis and place the lipo in it as part of the chassis.
Picture a really small TC3 or Xray M18. Thats the set-up I am looking to recreate, not exactly, just smaller and really similar.

That sounds like a good idea , you will also have a lower Center of gravity that way.I was thinking to cut a hole in the lexan chassis and place the lipo in it as part of the chassis.
.
Looks really sweet , Cant wait to see it coming along.
Great project !

i had this same idea a while back. the idea of a zz- sized AWD impreza got stuck in my head...
Its only an idea, but i think the big sticking point at the front end will be the dogbone setup from the MT. its just built too big to keep it down to a street ride/truck.
I dunno how possible it is, but in my head i had envisioned some sort of flexible thin plastic axle for the front. You know the plastic tag-y things that attach the swingtag to clothes in a store? maybe something like that might do the job
EDIT - it looks like some of the other pimps are having luck with small springs...

"You guys are Wack"
"Wiggity Wack?"
"Nope, just regular kind"

A micro servo for steering , the size the TTTT guys use ?
http://www.mikromodellbau.de/en-index.html can be found here
Might work if you used the smallest one , Because I dont think there would be enough upright space to use the larger blue one.

@SWG....I'd like to use just one SS motor. Don't really have that much room for 2. Unless I reconfigure the whole thing to be a bigger ride. I think the SS motor will have enough power for all for bit sized wheels, but I won't know for sure until I get far enoug to try it out.
The front dog bones and suspension might shrink down too. Not sure on how or what I'll use.
Its a ongoing project I started on just to see how far along I can get. I didn't have any real plans, just an idea and some motivation one night and got this far.

For the steering there is some info on how to use a zzse pcb and steering hardwear but it is a bulky option (i did it to keep the $$$ down rather than using a servo) That and i just wanted to see if it could be done at all.
Steering is always the hardest part in these tiny 4wd projects,, Tiny U joints and dog bones are just a pain to work with and take alot of time. If you go with a solid axle up front it may make things a little easier but i cant say for sure.
As far as a motor goes, might i suggest the MT motor with the ss pinion? Ive found that the ss motors have higher speed but lack in the torque area. By gearing the MT motor (im using an orange one for best speed) and gearing it higher you may get the best of both worlds. Im using this setup in my new buggy project and it seems to be working quite well.
Best advice i can give is to take it slow and think it out. You will probably end up re thinking it several times before you find the correct answer. Also, do some research on the TTT german sites and google some full sized 4 wheel drive parts to see how you can shrink them down and simplify them.

Thanks for the advice.
I'm a stubborn ass sometimes. The reason I say that is that I like to totally go plans free.
To put it another way...
If I was a muscian writing an album, I would try not to listen to too much of one type of music, if any at all, because it would show way too much in the final project/product. Plus, I don't want to feel like I'm coping something.
I look at what you guys around here are building and it shocks me on how somethings get pulled off. Truely amazing work!
However, with this ride I think I will have to give in and start investigating more and more as I go along.
The steering is going to be a real bitch of a set-up to finish, but I think I can come up with something.
I just wanna see how far I can get without cheating or peaking in the game guide. (like a video game)
