COE

Post by steelwoolghandi »

I have build car bodies out of Polystyrene and moded bodies from other plastic cars but this is my first molded and cast body.

It’s a 1947 Ford Cab Over and I made the mold first then cast the body. The outside came out great and the inside is hollow to allow the RC parts. The inside is a bid rough but the outside came out smooth as a baby’s bottom.

The only thing that did not come out right that I will fix in the next mold is the step side off the fenders. On this body I can just add a piece of polystyrene and no one will notice once painted.

The original body is metal and so to make an RC out of it was going to be to heavy and the fenders and body were two piece so I did not want to deal with that also.

I left a section on the back to attach any type of Bed (Flat or Box) and still allow enough room for the RC Chassis underneath it.

Here are some pictures of the COE body I will be building a flat bed on the first one and I think a Box bed on the next one.

It looks great man. :-o You were able to get the detail in the grill, and it looks like the lights came out very well. That looked like the most problematic areas..... can't wait to see what you'll do with it

The mold was made out of liquified Latex Rubber. You brush it on to the truck and put about 10 coats of it on. After that you pull it off and you have the outside mold.

You then do the inside mold so that you can make a hollow cavaty for the RC chassis to fit into. It took about a week and a half just to make the two mold. I have found making these is not a quick process.

The cast soft drys in 24 hours and it hard dries in 72 hours.

there is more to the process such as mold release and the mixing of the material and yada, yada, yada......

I have my eye already on another truck I want to do a mold of but I want to finish one of these to see if its worth doing another one

Dear Life Cereal, Where do you get off? Part of a balanced breakfast and delicious? Who do you think you are? By now you may have guessed I'm speaking ironically and have nothing but good things to say about what you do. Life cereal do not change a thing.

nice work!! having tried this before, I know it aint easy..

for making moulds, you can't beat silicone rubbers, though they cost a bit more.

that looks like a similar polyester resin to what I tried, there are better 50:50 mix white PU resins available that also mix to a thin consistency for excellent detail reproduction.

Waiting to see ya finished truck

If this works out ok and it seem to I found a source for 2 Gal of Casting material and material for making Rubber molds.

I plan to make more but I need to speed up the process (not sure it can be done)

I will be posting pictures as soon as I get far enough ahead to have something worth while to see. :-o
