I've never owned one and don't think I will. I got the chance to play with one at a lhs around this time last year and not only did it feel like it should be sold at a dollar store but it was slow to boot.
If it's under ten bucks, I say let him try it out. If it passes that $10 mark I say forget about it.

If they are anything like the Tyco Canned Heat cars, they are not very fast or exicting. The motor is a standard size, so you could more that likely hop it up with some kind of slot car motor, but otherwise, there are no drop in hop ups.

thanx for the info guys. They cost approx US$20 so do bit clones :? so I'll tell him to hold his $$$ and save for some bits or an Xmod.

This things can be modded and up to 90 km/h like relay mods and custom motors. look this http://www.carmoworld.com . I am ordered toyeast five of them 4 auldey and 1 dark horse jeep. When i get the packages i am writing a little tutorial about them.

Get a ZipZaps SE. They're gobs of fun to drive, and with my homemade antenna and the steering pot fix, they're fully propo and easy to drive. The upgrades are cheap, too-just get the microamps FET mod, the NX (purple) motor, and the red gearing. With these mods, the speed jumps to 10 miles per hour!
