Excess old computer parts can come in handy. What you see below is a piece of plastic that was used by old hardrives to shine a LED indicator through a front panel. So the good thing here is that this plastic is suited to carry light, so to speak.

So what I did was get a small SMD blue led and glued it to the end of one of the pieces. Here you can see it mounted at the end.

Now, putting 3V though it gets OK(but not great) results:

In semi-strong light:

As you can see, not very bright.

In a darker environment:
Image

It really needs to be dark to see the effect well.

But, putting 6V through the blue led show a much stonger effect.

In semi-strong light:

As you can see, there's still some definition in the light pattern coming from the clear plastic rod.

In a darker environment:

Now it rocks!

More experimentation to continue, more to come!
