My X-Mod review...

Post by payaso »

I went to the RS here at the mall to get my new X-Mod, and I was looking at it in the box, when I noticed the same one already put together..

I asked the guy if I could check that one out, and he said sure...

It was fully charged, so I took it for a spin in the store..

My first impressions are what a piece of SHIT.. Not trying to offend anybody that likes em, but for me, I just think they're a big dookie piece of doo doo.. I don't really drive on flat surfaces though, and these things seem like they're more set up to race on a super flat shit.. And if you jumped it, you probably break some shit..

I had to cut the guy off in his little sales pitch, and tell him my 1/64 car would whip this things ass up, and down... (I actually used those words)

He just snickered, and said really?

Like I said before. I'm not trying to offend anyone with these, but I'll be sticking with my bits.. They're just not my cup of tea.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no big advocate, BUT you gotta be fair with this shit...You were probably running the car on carpet at RS right? XMods have like ZERO ground clearance so running on anything other than HARD, SMOOTH surfaces is gonna drag these shits down.

The other thing is you probably tested a stock setup, which has 8-tooth gearing and a 26k motor...Which means it needs ROOM to get up to speed, something else a RadioShack store lacks.

I ain't trying to shoot you down my nubian sister, just saying you gotta even the playing field and then make the decision or comparison.

...Myself, now I'm thinking about getting the AWD and Stage-2 motor kits to see just how much more badass I can get this thing...But doing so might bring me closer to KEEPING the goddamned thing! I might just say F-it and pack the shit up and bring it back before I get hooked.

I could see how one might get that impression. I do think that these things aren't that unlike bits in that the driving surface/area is pretty important. After having an XMod for a couple days, I really like it, but I won't be leaving my Bits anytime soon. They do suck down the batteries, and it will cost around $130-$150 to trick out an Xmod to my liking, but the racing is pretty intense, and I think they're built like a tank for $50.

LMAO... I hear ya bro... The performance wasn't that bad for me, and yep it was on carpet, but that's where I do my racing, so I needed to test it there as well.. What gets me is the car itself. It just looks like it's limited on its abilities. ie. rough terrain, jumping.. Things like that are more suited for me...

My bit with alloys will run on thick carpet (not burbur) and plow over speaker wires, pencils, pens, and cigarette lighters.. It's like a little tank..

I guess size has alot to do with it too. I'm a true micro fan, and the size of the X-Mods are just out of the size range for me too..

The car would be fun to drive in a huge open area if that's what you're into.

I need to get off my lazy ass a show a vid clip of what my bit can do..

I agree with the whoe size thing, my mini z has not been out in forever(couldn't even tell you what box its packed in). and its easyer to race in the living room with 5 buddies and some beer :)

I would though get an xmod only cause the price and thre is a track at the mall that I go to once a month.

I also picked up an epoch indoor racer so we will see what that is like when it comes in.

But all in all Size is big factor in the matter.

Yup, I'm living in a goddamned box myself, I gotta fricken sit side-saddle to take a shit in our guest bathroom (I mean that literally) that's how small a Condo we got.

So the Mini-Zs and Overland I got are doing a great job of taking up space...So now, with this thread, my pratical side calls and I'll be bringing the X back this week.

whats funny is now that the SE's can be fetted to 8.5 mph, by comparison, it kicks the shit out of the x-mod as far as what I'm reading.
that, the scale and price difference are enough for me to stay away.

there's a laundry list of pro's and con's on every car, guess it just matters how those weigh out for your personal preference.

now that it seems decided you need extremely flat and smooth surface for the x-mod, to you owners out there, what kind of room do you recommend for these things? do you need a rather large area?
Dear Life Cereal, Where do you get off? Part of a balanced breakfast and delicious? Who do you think you are? By now you may have guessed I'm speaking ironically and have nothing but good things to say about what you do. Life cereal do not change a thing.

C-Dub,

The Xs are basically the same size as the Zs, which means you aint' gonna get a satisfying race going on someone's kitchen floor.

Think 1/2 a Basketball court or bigger in order to properly 'stretch your arms' with the X (or Z for that matter)

That's what I was thinking... If I lived with my cousin, I be hooked up, and have a X-Mod..

He rents a old church to live in, and it has a full size basket ball court upstairs.. Not to mention the kitchen that has 5 ovens..lol

Him and 3 roommates. Very cool pad for single people.

hue35 and I had some excellent Xmod racing in an area approximately 20'x25', so not quite as big as 1/2 a basketball court, but close. And the surface needs to be CLEAN if it's smooth, otherwise your tires dust up pretty quickly and things get pretty squirrely. XMods have tons of torque, even with the low torque/high speed motor/gear combo. I'm thinking something like a tennis court with a little tooth will be optimal.
