Reverse Override

I have to admit, I am pretty new to RC's and more so miniture RC's. I bought an Xmod Supra. It's pretty sweet. The reverse on this thing drives me nuts though. I want to be able to just hit reverse and go into reverse. It seems like I have to wait for it to stop going forward, or hit reverse 2x (sometimes more) for it to kick into reverse.
I called the guys at xmodsrc.com and was told the car is designed this way to avoid burning out the motor. I'm looking around online and seeing motor upgrades from RS for like 15$. Depending on how quickly instant reverse shifting would burn the motor, I would like to override the reverse safety.
Does anyone know how the reverse safety works? Is it a function of the controller, or the car itself? Other RC's go directly into reverse and seem to last a long time...why is this different?
