Off Road Xmod

Post by sg219 »

I was motivated to do this to an Xmod by seeing all of these 4x4's poppin' up around here. Plus, I really haven't seen any 4x4 Xmodss around.

The wheels are from a Stampeder, or at least that is what it says on the wheels. The wheels came with that stuff I got off of EZ, they were just chillin' there askin' to be used!!!

What I did was...

1--Remove the Xmod wheels.

2--Place a small piece of electrical tape around the axle to prevent the bearing from slidin' out.

3--Dremeled the inside of the hub out to fit the entire wheel nut. Sorta like countersinking it into the hub.

4--Super Glued those puppies in there.

5--To install, I held the axle with the tape already on, with a pair of needle nose pliers and twisted the wheel on.

6--Take the body and dremel the wheel wells till the body fits and the wheels turn properly!! Don't be a puss about it either, just grind that thing till it works!!!

I ran it around the house for a minute and it worked all right!! The real test is outside, but its been raining all day, so I'll have to wait for some outdoor vid shooting.

There pretty hard, but plyable. Should break in nicely, as long as the wheels don't fall off......Around the house it seemed ok, but I still gotta hit that dirt!!!!!!

Now I gotta find some dirt to hit.....Never even thought about that till right now.

Hey betty..Since I got you in here...

Any suggestions on how to stiffin the suspension? The Xmod only has about 1/4 to 3/8 inch clearence. If that much? I want to keep the car up so I don't loose any clearence.

I just did this tonight, so I really haven't looked around all that much for after market springs that would fit and if they are even on the market to fit an Xmod.

i dunno crap about xmods, but generally you can grind down the parts that limit suspension travel. but you increase the chance of knuckles popping out on heavy impacts. but i have no idea how xmods are designed, never looked at them too closely

No problem Betty, I understand. I'm the same way with anything bigger than an Xmod. I have no clue about 1/10's, 1/8's, 2/19's, Nitros and stuff. I just know that I REALLY want a Nitro so I can jump Bird's crib!!!

I'll just have to do a little experimenting. I don't want to put this thing thru a work out till its ready to hold up to it!! It'll be no fun if I get out there in the dirt and it last for 30 seconds. Gotta get it tuned right.

That's cool! One way you could stiffen the suspension beyond the stiffest sprints in the suspension upgrade would be to put the stiffest springs in, and then take the stock springs and either put them in too, or cut them in half and put 1 1/2 springs into each suspension point.

Thanks for the props everyone!!! It motivates me to keep moddin' and improving the mods, like what I'm going to post now.

Image
Chassis Shot, with body grindings!!!

Image
New anttenna, with SG bent into tip!! No matter how much I tried, I couldn't get the 'tenna to stop moving!!

Image
Took tape spacer off, and used a toggle switch cover that was cut to fit. Huge improvment.

Image
New smaller wheel mod, next to old larger one. Smaller one has ZZ hubcaps glued to them with the Xmod nuts glued on.

Image
Larger wheels with countersunk Xmod nuts.

Image
The smaller wheels. Yet to be tested, still drying.

The body has been totally weight reduced. Anything that was unnessary was dremeled off!! No mirrors, mounts for the mirrors, no tail pipe mount, no hood mounts. Headlight covers and hood are glued on. The only screws in the body are the front and rear bumper. I ground the rear wells to the bottom of the window and the front to the headlight and back to door. I'll have pics of this later.

I also have vid that Bird helped out with and shot for me, but need to edit so you can load it and watch it in the same night!! The vid was shot in front of Bird's crib on a hill with a perfect jumping curb!!! I'm off to search out some dirt for some footage!!! Vid will be posted up on http://www.sg219.com, hopefully later tonight!!!! I'll drop a post when its up.

Anyone have a really big staple, and do they sell install kits for the staple suspension kit? :???:

TO BE CONTINUED...................
