Dumped an iwaver board into an xmod evo mustang.

The stock EVO yellow steering motor does not work with the iwaver
board, it's too slow and too weak. Replaced it with an SSMT24 steering
motor(black endbell..mucho torque).
I'm able to retain the xmod steering pot and gears.

Pot wires.
Orange and black pot wires go to pad S1 on the iw02 board.
White pot wire goes to pad S2. SSMT servo motor fits right in to
the original xmod motor location. Just swap pinions.




video of the steering, very smooth and not jerky like the xmod.
My evo basically had 2 steps. stutter and full lock...this is so much better.

Dang, i tried this a while ago but ran into the motor issue and just couldnt find a replacement that worked well. Great job clint!

good job though dude. I haven't looked at the video but I suggest you get an alloy steering rod (if you haven't already). Makes the steering a lot more consistent. (the stock steering rods flex too much).

issue #1:
It's a full bling gpm awd car with ball diffs. Pretty friggin heavy.
It's got dry bearings, stage 2 motor and low gearing 9/24, but using the
street truck tires. The Stock iwaver fets get uncomfortably warm, but do
not blow. A Nelly would be a nice upgrade. It could be mounted right
next to the iw board, and both together would still have a smaller
footprint than the original evo board.

issue #2:
Even with the propo steering, full lock turns are crap because there's not
enough physical room for the steering arm to move inside its housing.
It _wants_ to turn more, just can't. WARNING! plastic will be harmed in
the search for "tighter than xmod" steering.

I'm trying to find out what these black endbell ssmt steering motors are,
so we have a documented source of them. Unfortunatly ZZMT motors
have quite a bit less torque than these. Edit: looks like http://www.homefly.com
has these N20 motors for 4$ each.

Overall this is a damn good mod. I've ran thru more sets of
batteries in 2 nights than i have the whole time i've owned this car.


summary: open up the steering angle and get a nelly and the iMod(tm) is born


Edit: fixed the steering...actually i just removed the AWD driveshaft
and this thing hauls ass. There was binding in the front diff that was
screwing it all up. Fets nor motor get warm now and it turns on a dime. Excellent torque, even for the weight. Going to have to make a custom
length carbon fiber driveshaft for it. Seems with the alum gearboxes,
the stock alum driveshaft is a tiny bit long. gpm's tolerances
