iWaver PRO FETs Revealed!

Post by Aaron »

ausmicro.com is happy to break the news that we've established the FETs used in the iWaver PRO electronics!

They are a FDS4501H from Fairchild Semi-Conductor.

The good news is these FETs are actually reasonably decent!

Here's the low-down.

Total On-Resistance at Mini-Z logic voltages:
FDS4501H: 0.0775 ohms
IRF7389: 0.1650 ohms
IRF7317: 0.0620 ohms
SI4562DY: 0.0620 ohms
IRF7210/IRF7809AV Hybrid: 0.02 ohms

Toyeast say the new Pro FETs can handle 5A motors drains, and they can, the P-Channel maxes out at 5.6A but the power dissipation of the package is still quite low at 2.5W so the internal resistance will work against it.

So are they any good?
In our opinion these FETs should have been fitted to every Mini-Z ever made, their performance would be better than the original FETs used in most Mini-Z boards, and they are certainly a step above and beyond the 3003 packages!
BUT they're not the solution to running hot motors!
That still needs lower on resistances and better current handling. But they're a great platform to start with.

People have already used FDS4501H stacks in their Mini-Zs with good effect, but at the end of the day IRF7317s, SI4562DYs or a Whoa Nelly (or soon to be documented internal hybrid) are a way better deal!
