Got an MR02; another drift clip pg. 4

Post by color0 »

here's my new MR02; got it two days ago as a late b-day gift. i decided to hop it up a little for some indoor drift action, so here we are.

still not much on the body side of the equation, so just chassis shots. i have the stock motor in there, a 3racing motor pod, MZR dry bearings, drift tires up front and 55's in the rear. the diff was supposed to be locked but the glue won't set. sorry for the dark pics.

i like the quality of this mount, IMO it's better than what gpm makes (for xmods, at least). the parts fit together smoothly and the gear mesh is easily adjustable. i'd recommend this mount in conjunction with a disk damper, i personally like the soft rear end for the traction and slow reflexes, but i think racers will want something more responsive.

the MZR dry bearings are absolutely amazing. i didn't so much as touch the wheels, and they'd spin for the next 10 seconds. this'll take some getting used to, especially when i'm changing batteries (and i touch the wheels... they'll just keep on spinning while i change the batts out).

the drift tires are a PITA to put on... i ended up sanding the inner edge of the tires to let them slip over the wheels.

overall i really like this car, it's a whole step up away from xmods, even up away from my was-favorite 22B. i even have time to react before i have to countersteer; what awesomeness.

i'm putting an '03 NSX whitebody on this, with some black/carbon accents to make it look NSX-R-ish; but with the JGTC bodykit you can't really look stock. *shrug*

Yeah, but the NSX is a sexy looking body just begging for a nice paint job.

Only one issue though, The Kyosho NSX only fits on the MR-02RM. You've got a MR-02MM. The MM setup is actually longer even at the shortest setting than the RM setup so the NSX's rear tires will probably rub on the back of the wheel wells.

well, thank goodness 3racing made the motor mount capable of doing a 94 MM setup. the wheelbase is 94mm on this car, matching the nsx's wheelbase. :-o

off to sand the tires now...

very nice car . what are those drift tires? never heard of drift tires for mini-z. :???: if it is possible, please post a vid :-)
i might try to drift my mini-z but it is set up to race (tuned well now). so it could prove to be hard.
deffinately you got one good looking piece. alloy diff...?

drift tires for mini-z AWD; i only put them on the front. MZR should stock them under the 'tires' section of their store.

and yeah, i do need an alloy diff. stock one wobbles a little, i can hear the rear end hopping when i slide. :o

i got shell mounted, if not finished. sorry for dark picture, again:

it doesn't go any lower, i've got 0.25mm between the front fender and the front wheels, and i had to match the rear ride height to keep the sideskirt level to the ground.

see that window? too much light. You should take your pics while backing your lightsource. You're filming "the darkside of the moon" You need to photograph the side that reflects the most light back into the lens.

I still hate you and your racer bed :-)

yea yea maxx... someday i'll just have to get a full-size pic of my beastly bed for you to hate.

as for this MR02... i transplanted a hyper dash 2 armature into the stock can. and boy oh boy can this baby drift now. it's a bumpy ride over the gaps in the marble, but i'm somehow able to control the throttle most of the time so that the car can drift a wide semicircle around the perimeter of the front foyer. this is absolutely amazing.

i definitely need a ball diff now, because high-speed turn in really sucks.

So you find that the difference in the TX to be one of the major contributors to the driftability? I mean, they are the same scale as Xmods... so why is this THAT much easier to drift? It's rwd for pete's sake.

i honestly don't know for sure... i'm using an iwaver Tx with this thing, but the response time is better than iwaver, better than xmods' stuff. the quick response time, i think, is what allows me to drift it well. i practice drifting on car sims all the time, so it feels great to be able to use the same motions and drift an RC car.

like you said, the rest of the stuff is standard 1/28: plastic tires front, 55 degree rubbers rear, locked diff and RWD... i've tried that setup on an xmod, it sucks.

gotta give kyosho credit where's it's due...

500 and some steps, verses 15 steps, yup, the Mini-Z is gonna give you much more precise control than the Xmod.
...crazy man, crazy...dig it.

I concur.

Max, you should get your hands on a Mini-Z if you haven't already. It's much different than an Xmod in terms of stablity and control. Of-course, you pay for that in the cost of the car. I would really love to see you paint up a Kyosho body though.

Most drift cars are, aren't they? I know that AWD makes it easier, but true drifting is a RWD thing.

I know 1:1 drifters are rwd, but I thought you needed awd for RCs.
I'm not gunna get a mini-z, I already have a MRS4. I would like to do an auto-scale tho :???: a supra or something. NO! the new '06 WRX.

Any how, I'm off to sand a bod for pimperation...chao

i swear i WILL get the details painted sometime, i'm going to prep it soon. using half a coat of black on two coats of gunmetal to make a CF look for some parts, namely the spoiler center section, the hood and the headlights. then i gotta paint some vents.
