Got this one de-stickered and the body mounts made.

Since Frizzen is just talking to himself anyway...

RedRustBucket posted about Stomper Pulls in another thread. This intrigued me. I started to read about various '80s Stomper mods. Hmmmm.

I grab one of my body donor Powerscout chassis, open it up...
1. CA the axle clutches
2. Remove rear accessory mount
3. Open molded notch in upper deck above rear accy mount
4. Begin fabricating adjustible puller hitch.

Chassis will accomidate one HELL of an overbuilt hitch, going forward of the screws that hold the chassis plates together. It'll take some thought to build, but it'll be able to hold some impressive stresses!

Since an HO motor in the only part to fry, I grab one of my Saft 3.6v Li-SOCl2 AA batteries and drop in, wow.

Initial impression: This was DESIGNED to be a puller, then downgraded so kids wouldn't destroy them immediately.

You got a pic of the drive train in that? Kind of sucks that there are axle clutches. The stompers use worm gears to the ring gear which hold up to a lot of stress. If you're going crazy pulling power with no need for clearance you could use slot car components and get a huge ring gear that would almost touch the ground along with the tiniest pinion you could find.

I think I have some stomper chassis lying around if you need parts.

I took some pics when I had it open. Maybe upload after work.

Pinion, then like 4 gear trans, then pinion and crown gear.

The axle clutches are nothing CA or JB Weld can't fix. Next weakpoint probably the rim to axle, or slipping the trans.

To open it up, there are 5 screws, and a steel rod to remove. Push out the front body mount rod, open battery lock and remove battery, remove one screw at each chassis corner, and one under battery.

Left is Forward.
Image
Notice the Right (rear) attachment point is seperate from the chassis, and a rear hitch mount can be fabricated up all the way to the crown gear. With all the interfaces, that's a STRONG chassis tie!

Image
The gearing is really interesting. When closed up, the motor drops into the big open area at top of pic, motor pinion meshes with the gear that's NOT meshed with anything at the moment. With stock setup, the motor comes up to speed no load, then as you keep pushing the switch to lock it ON, it forces mesh with the next gear in trans.

Huh, my front driveshaft bushing is aft of its slot, better double check that when I tear down for the next set of pics. (Will include hitch to chassis interface, and weight bucket from a Winch)

Excessive Tech-
Motor Pinion 8T -- 0.33
24 coupled with 10 -- 0.5
20 with 8 -- 0.4
20 with 8 -- 0.4
driveshaft 20 with 8 -- 0.444
crown 18
Which my bad math says should be about 90:1

Chassis looks beefy. The drivetrain is way more complicated than the stompers. You may end up with some issues stripping gears.

Here's a pic of the drivetrain of a modified stomper. A stock one would be the same except a shorter w/b and a single motor with a pinion protruding from both ends to drive the worm gears to the axles.

Here's what I would do.

Hope you do it, I'd love to see it. Has me thinking about messing with one.

Mo' Pics.

Hitch from Hell

Weight Bucket from Hell

If I wanted to get more extreme, I think next would be adding turns to the motor, and balancing the armature. But, I already have the (known) best pulling Powerscout in the world, so at this point it's kinda a wash unless I could get others to start.

Ok, for that I'd need a pair of the ZZ-M size motored gearmotors that are 10RPM output. I only have one.

You know, if we could come up with a easily built simple sled and an agreed upon track, etc, etc. I'd be willing to build one, and maybe we could get some others to do the same and we could have a running pull off. :???: You could video tape the run and submit it here or in it's own thread... :???: You already got me interested enough that when I was at the Walgreens yesterday, I picked up a hummer power wheels that was on sale. :???:

edit: I just realized, you're in Indy huh? I do like to get to Indy Raceway Park a few times each summer, we could meet in the parking lot and have an honest pull off...sure people would wonder why the hell two grown me were playing with little trucks in the dirt but... :???:

Yeah, the weight puller sled is the issue. Simple design, implimentation seems to be the issue. I was thinking Pullback car for axle, hotwheels chassis for weight box roller, hadn't really gotten much farther...

Stomper sled is vintage, so $$.
The SST is better and more sought after, so $$$

Hummer power wheels? Weren't those the 12v electric plastic things kids ride IN?
Yeah, IRP would be a good meeting place, but bring your Kamaz too. :-D

Check yard sales and flea markets. My brother picked up 3 semis and 2 reg. stompers with a pulling sled that's missing the weight box for $5 at a yard sale near him.

Looks good.

PowerScouts seem to now have 6X6 chassis with semi trucks. I didn't get to really check them out, g/f was getting bored in that part of toy section.
