Going old school with a chevy ssr

Post by Sporttracguy »

Yesterday i was walking through toysrus and i noticed this Earnhardt jr car sitting on the shelf with a bunch of red tags on it...The box had been opened and the remote was missing an antenna but the price was $5 down from $20 so i figured what the hell. Took it home, dual celled it and it actualy worked pretty well although it has a strange remote. Today i decided that NASCAR is not for me so i gound this chevy ssr (Plastic) body i took from a 4 wheel pull back car and started grinding away. Now that the fit is correct and as low as i can get it (believe it or not the steering still works with the body that low) im thinking of going for a retro old school look,, maybe a two toned paint job and some old style hub caps and white walls maybe,, not sure,, just thought i would post and see if i can get some opinions. I still need to make a tonneau cover for the bed since i had to cut t out for the motor to have any room.

Looks great... one thing I might look at is filling up those rear wheel wells a bit with some wider rear tires. Even just setting the current wheels outward a bit would give the same effect. I think those tires and wheels could look real cool, depending what your paint's gonna be... they lend themselves perfectly to old-school hot rod style.

Where'd you find that body, by the way?

That is looking SWEET as you know I like the looks of old school rides and that one has the start for a vary nice ride. I am with Hue on this one maybe some wider tires on the back and to fit them in you might have to grind out the wheel wells a bit I noticed they are real thick.

keep us up to date man looking real good! 8-)

Yeah, those wheel wells are extreamly thick,, ill grind that out once i figure out what wheels im going to use. I figure its best to see what my parts are going to be before i start grinding too much lol. I like having the front wheels resting a little under the body so i cant go too much wider up front but the rear has tons of room.
here is a better shot of what the stock wheels and tires look like,, they arent staying that way of course.. I had a wicked shadow in those other pictures didnt i

I was kind of thinking these wheels,, what do you think?

EDIT: i just did a really fast photoshop of one way it could turn out,, what do you think?

Think it looks kinda classy, almost speed racer-ish too.
I say go for it.

I don't know man. Those rims are for a real old school ride, not a remake of an old school ride (if you catch my drift)

Here is a few pics

I like 'em... I think that truck will look better with the old-school wheels, personally.

I ran to the store between classes and picked up one of those PT crusers with the white walls (same as above picture) and am in the process of fitting them to the axles. Honestly i think they are going to look really good if i can pull off the matching two toned white and red paint job,, with the white and that ugly stock gold pin stripes it doesnt look so hot. I guess we will see,,, might be a little while though

ok, here is an update,, i now have the wheels and tires installed with a better offset to fill in the wheel wells a bit better. I just started on cleaning up the body and removing the graphics that came with the truck (im shaving down where the plastic mold left some lines and what not)

Now that the wheels are on i think its going to look really nice with the red and white two tone

EDIT: She now has a fresh coat of white paint and the clear coat is drying. Tomorrow i hope to tape her off and finish with the red. I need to let the clear cure over night before i put any tape on it

I've seen a 1:1 at a dealership with #2. It was a yellow bottom with a purple top. Not my color preference at all, but I thought it looked good in person. I personally think that #3 is the best option. I'd love to see that white and black with a red penstripe through it.

Yeah, I think something like that would be killer. I'm not sure which pinstripe I like better, but I'm leaning towards two. I think that paint would really match the wheels and tires.
