Gears...Gears....Gears...

OK I am just wondering about this whole gear thing.
I dont really understand the ratio thing like "9.86:1"
what does each number represent?
Also for instance I have the ZZ green, blue and red gears, LXX/Tomy Orange. ( I know I need to get some new gears lol)
I know the ZZ blue and Tomy orange are the same but what if you started to mix and match them would this increase/decrease performance?
Sorry if these seem like stupid questions just thought I would ask whats always on my mind when changing things around on my cars.
thanks

the ratio i sbasically how many times the motor must spin to turn the wheel 1 time. 9.86:1 means there will be 9.86 revolutions on the motor to one revolution of the tire.

but how does it change? I have
blue
white and
pink gears in front of me.
All have the same number of teeth? WTF?

That might be the make there. Cause if I look at just the ZZ I notice that the red has more then the blue.
also the ZZ blue has the same amount of teeth as the Tomy orange but the blue look that are closer together.
what are the best gears for sped?

technically, the closer to 1:1 you get the faster you would be, one revolution of the motor would equal one revolution of the tire.( hence a 4.2 motor turns 42,000 revolutions per minute[rpm] and at 1:1 the tire would also have 42,000 rpm.)But realistically, you lose alot of torque and the car actually wouldnt be able to really move i dont think cause of all the torque loss. Higher gear ratios 12:1 for example are slower top speed wise but will give the car greater torque.

I believe the orange tomy gear is the same as the green zip zap gear (not blue) 9.86:1.

Ahhh yes, Gears.
It's works on a +/- scale. The higher the ratio (like 12:1 vs. 9.86:1) the more 'torque' you have, but at the expense of top speed...And vice versa.
I go into it with a little more detail with #16:

Less teeth?
Teeth closer together??

Thats what I am saying Stoli hehe they just confuse me when tring to pick the gears for the car. Like is it ok to mix the colours? am I loosin power? things like that.
So how would you calculate the gears?

you count...but ive noticed that teal gears got crazy speed but slooow accelleration and not alot of tourqe
but the orange gears how ok speed and ok accelloration and ok tourqe (i use these i cal lthe the simple gear)
blue gears got not alot of speed but fast acceloration and lots and lots of tourqe
but i like the orange because there a good gear but i was thinkin sunce teal dont have alot of tourqe so they accel slow because there is no tourqe to push it when its goin slow and theres no traction so i tried different gear combos and stuff but i was think since i have mosfets maybe this might make up for tourqe so i might try teal gears ill edit in my post later
EDIT=i am proud to say i am promoting my orange gears to teal they are da shiznat

with a dual cell teal is the way to go. the extra hp overcomes the slow start.
torque gearing is great for wheelies but not good for any kind of racing.
orange isnt bad either but if you want a dragster i suggest teal.
