poor reception..

Post by VooDooMafia »

I was getting poor reception on both my tomy and LXX cars (about 5 feet or so). I was going to mod the controller's antena but didn't get around to it yet.

But when I went to change the battery on the tomy today I noticed a few things.
  • 1.the antena is soldered near the rear of the pbc but comes out the front
  • 2.the antena was also tied in a small knot under teh pbc
well I tool the knot out and routed the antena out the back of the pbc and gained about 2 inches or so to the antena and about 10 fet to the range.

just thought i would mention it incase other with a range problem wanna try this first (I did it to the LXX aswell).

first of all tomy controllers = p.o.s. they never get good range. round clone controllers seem to work best but thundercharger controllers are pretty good as well.

wonder if just changing the flimsy wire antenna to a telescopic antenna would increase the tomy controller range problem?
also, think there's a difference between MS and Tomy controllers VS range?

my MS 49's get aight range stock.
my Tomy 57 gets increadible range stock.

A few tips and reasons:

1) The higher the frequency of the tx/rx the better range you get out of the box, period. This is because at a higher freq energy radiates futher for the same amount of power.

2) Clone tx's have a better range than MS/Bit-g tx's cause the circuit is a bit different in the RF output stage on the controller. The rx pcb of a clone is usually the same as the original MS/Bit-g's pcb's so that's why hog is correct is saying that the tomy controllers suck ass.

3) A longer antenna on the car will get you better performance versus increasing the antenna length on the controller, normalised.

4) The more right angled to the ground the antenna is (IE: it's as straight up as possible) the better range you wil get. This is because the antenna works better when the ground plane is at even density around it. (RF theory states this as a fundamental requirement when dealing wih antennas that are NOT a full wavelength long for the freqency at hand). For 27Mhz a full antenna is 11M is length!

I use a number 9 electric guitar string and it works very well. The avg length I use is approx 12cm. I can get an avg distance of 11M indoors and over 20m outside.
