Front wheel drive bit?

Post by ph2t »

I had just finished a pullback wheel mod the other day and was stuffing around with the car on my floorboards and was generally happy with my mod.

I've always toyed with the idea of the car being flipped around and going in reverse and steering with the rear end. You have all probably done this and noticed that the car (with normal tyres & rims) turns way to sharply and isn't really accurate in its steering.

This steering response is also dependant on the surface you are driving on. With carpet it's usually a too tight a turn and the car flips. On a more smooth surface the car spins out on the turning axis and usually ends up doing a 180 for the smallest click of the steering buttons.

So with all this as a background I'd thought I'd give the idea ago again with the pullback modded car. Wow! The steering actually works and suprisingly it works rather well!

The pullback mod I've done is the fullsize pullback wheels on the front and rear so I think with this change the rear wheels which are now steering grip the surface better. With better grip the turning circle is now more consistent.

I'm gonna mod a chassis and test this throughly. This is not really a mod for everyone but with polished floorboards as my main driving surface it works well for me.

To achieve it I guess the following changes would be needed:

1) Flip the motor wires.
2) Flip the steering wires.
3) Mod the chassis to lower the "new" front end and raise the "new" rear end.

There is probably going to be issues with this mod but I'd thought I'd get some ideas going. Has anyone seen this mod done before? Any comments & suggestions?

ok biatch... (yea I've been drankin again)
first off, you're right on a lot of points, including

I have done this.
I used to drive forklifts, as you know, most steer from the rear.
some of my super strong/fast cars get no grip on some surfaces, it's easier to drive backwards.
race time, a lot of people will drive backwards when the crash just to keep moving so they keep up.
so...back to me driving like this. I've always been somewhat curious to driving like this, but as you say - no control.
I have driving like this with the bling, bling full size pullback wheel mod that I've posted (http://bitpimps.lixlink.com/pages/artic ... 14&catId=4)
steering is much better, but still probably not practicle for technical tracks.
there's probably a sweet spot in there though.
I know I can take corners probably 3 times faster in reverse as opposed to forwards, but steering is also probably 3 times sharper in reverse as opposed to forwards.

you crazy cat/"bugger" - wish I was rich, I'd fly down there and give ya a fresh one on our way to the bar/"pub" lol

Dear Life Cereal, Where do you get off? Part of a balanced breakfast and delicious? Who do you think you are? By now you may have guessed I'm speaking ironically and have nothing but good things to say about what you do. Life cereal do not change a thing.

Your right about technical tracks and slower speeds, or even surfaces that have some grip to start off with. But I feel that the floorboard surface is a good one for this setup and this will give me the abillity to really get some hardcore use out of my higher speed motors..

What I did notice in some quick tests is the car nows drifts in the more classical sense of all four wheels strafing around a corner....

I will agree with you there about the drifting, if I drive in reverse and just turn the car(with mosfets and 4.2) it will "drift" more then forwards.

let us know how this works out for you :)

Yeah, I'll get started tonight hopefully. I gotta first mod the wires to swap directions for fwd/rev and left/right and then I'll take some video, as always.....

Ok, here it is then:

This is the test subject:

And here's some video of it in action. In Divx format of course.

As I said earlier, not too shabby on the handling. More work to be done though. Might add lead weights under the rear wheels to help steering, possibly add spring suspension, we'll see.....
