Gear ratios data

Post by Son_Gokou »

Well, I'm copying and pasting this data from a thread I made o'er at TinyRC, so if there's something innacurate, excuse me.

Ok the maximum gear ratio (if you used the pinion, idler, and spur gears) would be 2:1. Now, if you count the number of teeth between the spur and idler gear, there is:

12:1.....24 spur teeth and 6 idler teeth
9.86:1....23 and 7
8.25:1......22 and 8
7:1.........21 and 9
6:1.........20 and 10
5.18:1......19 and 11
4.5:1......18 and 12
3.93:1......17 and 13
3.43:1........16 and 14 (This is not the KIT RACER gears, it is if you had ZZ gears with the amount of teeth)
3:1............15 and 15 (half and half, lol)
2.625:1.......14 and 16
2.3:1...........13 and 17
2:1.......12 and 18

Here is how to find out what gear ratio you have:

For ZZ and MS gears, the pinion gear has to turn 3 times to turn the idler gear once, because the pinion has 6 teeth and the idler has 18 teeth that touch the pinion gear.

Now, take the idler gear's teeth (inner teeth, in the center) and the spur teeth and divide the number of spur teeth by the idler teeth and multiply that number by three to find out your gear ratio. That's it!

I have been doing some research, and came up with this:

The KIT racer gear ratios are:

Idler gear teeth: 16
pinion gear teeth: 7

Now, for the gearing sets differences:

3.43:1: Spur teeth=18, center idler teeth: 12
3.95:1: Spur teeth=19, center idler teeth: 11
4.57:1: Spur teeth=20, center ilder teeth: 10

Now, if you had a 6T pinion gear, then the gear ratios wold become:

3.43:1 to 4:1
3.95:1 to 4.61:1
4.57:1 to 5.33:1

I tested these ratios with my motors. See, a ZZ motor is kind of bigger than the KIT motors, and thus, they need a smaller pinion gear, 6T, to turn the KIT gears. So, I used an NX motor with the 4:1 ratio and got a real 6.64 mph, where as if you used a 2.6 motor with the 3.43 set, it becomes a real 5.92 mph. You've heard this a million times from me, (well, not on THIS site) and I'll say it again. The yellow ZZ motor with the ZZ red gears can beat the NX motor with the blue gears by a small margin, so use as high a gear ratio (as close to 1:1) as you can and use as high a motor rpm as you can. the four things that help speed factor are the motor rpm, the gear ratio, the wheel circumference, and the weight the car is pushing.

Keep in mind that the faster speed the gears put out, the less torque it will have and the more years (well, not really, but you get my point lol) it will take to reach that top speed. I mean, which is easier, spinning the center or rotating the thing around the center? You guessed it.

Also, spinning heavier but faster gears means that you have a higher chance of burning the motor out, it has to draw more current, and if it's not getting enough, or if the current power output can't push the gears, there is a chance of frying the motor.

*whew* that was long. Sorry for the ranting, I hope this is helpful, at least to the person who created the "Gears....Gears....Gears..." thread.... :-)

I'm also going to put up data for the Xmods gearings. Here it is, in calculations for miles per hour and all that, it's calculated without load and friction, so it's gonna be less.

Stage 1 motors:

white gear (6:1 gearing)= 4333.3 wheel rpm, 11.45 mph

red gear (5.11:1 gearing)= 5088 wheel rpm, 13.45 mph

yellow gear (4.40:1 gearing)= 5909.09 Wheel rpm, 15.6 mph

blue gear (3.82:1 gearing)= 6806.3 Wheel rpm, 18 mph

Stage 2 motors:

white gear= 4983.295 wheel rpm, 13.1675 mph

red gear= 5851.2 wheel rpm, 15.464 mph

yellow gear= 6795.35 Wheel rpm, 17.94 mph

blue gear= 7827.245, 20.8 mph

With the 6 cell, multiply the result (either wheel rpm or mph, or motor rpm) by 1.5, to get the effect of the 6-cell.

The MAX speed, with the 30,000 rpm motor, blue gear, and 6-cell would bew around 30+ mph, Which should be a pretty pimpin speed.

Of course, it wouldn't be nearly as fast if you installed a Phast motor, KIT gears, Layman's Tricell, and FETs on a ZipZap

I'm estimating around 2.5 mph, at top speed.
