Motor RPM Tests (Preliminary results)
These are preliminary results because I don't trust some of the numbers I got when testing the higher RPM Motors.
Motors tested
Tomy: 1.0, 1.6, 2.2 and 2.6
ZipZaps: Stock, Performance, Turbo, and Racing
Bit Char-gmotors: 2.6, 3.0, 3.2 and 3.8
TinyRC: 3.8, R-spec and Formula34
Testing environment
I used a Tachometer that Wild03 (TinyRC Forum Member) made. All props and credit for that belongs to him. you can build one as well, check out his site:
http://www.geocities.com/wdiaz03/tachcometer.html
I used a AA Alkaline battery to power the motors for the tests. It should be noted though that I tried to use as close to 1.5v as possible so I had to interchange other batteries as needed...So variance at any time can be up to a few hundredths of a volt (+/- .03v). That might not seem like much, but in my tests, a variance of .03v meant a difference of 30Hz in a reading (that equates to 1,800rpm)
The Results (more than 1 result listed means I had multiples of that motor)
Tomy:
1.0: 10,860 / 10,500
2.2: 19,200 / 21,480 / 20,520 / 17,580 / 21,480
2.6: 25,080
ZipZaps
Stock (Green): 16,500 / 16,680 - Rated for 16,000
Performance (Red, previously called NOS): 22,320 - Rated for 21,500
Turbo (Yellow): 24,420 - rated for 23,500
Racing (Orange): 25,080 - rated for 28,000
Bit Char-Gmotors
2.6: 22,440
3.0: 25,680
3.2: 26,220
3.8: 28,500
TinyRC
3.8: Shit the bed, runs at about 16,000rpms now
RSpec: 30,600
Formula34: 29,460
Final Thoughts
At this point I have to declare that I need another Tool to test RPM. The Tachometer used just doesn't seem reliable enough at anything higher than 22,000 RPM. Oh well, at least I learned that even a TINY amount of voltage can make a NOTICIBLE impact on RPMs!

Alright, found a way around the limitation problem...Take readings at the wheel!
Instead of putting the encoder wheel right on the motor...I'm using a 12:1 axle and attaching the encoder there. This puts the 12:1 factor in play and puts my Tach well within it's limits.
And since it's attached to an axle, I had to use a car (with it's batteries) to test with. So these updated tests are a bit more 'realistic'.
So here are the updated results...
Tomy:
1.0: 10,860 / 10,500
2.2: 19,200 / 21,480 / 20,520 / 17,580 / 21,480
2.6: 26,928
ZipZaps
Green: 16,500 / 16,680 - Rated for 16,000
Red: 21,888 - Rated for 21,500
Yellow: 24,696 - rated for 23,500
Orange: 27,000 - rated for 28,000
Bit Char-Gmotors
2.6: 26,928
3.0: 30,960
3.2: 31,608
3.8: 36,288
TinyRC
3.8: 36,000 (weee, got it workin again)
RSpec: 36,360 (NICE!)
Formula34: 33,696

Dear Life Cereal, Where do you get off? Part of a balanced breakfast and delicious? Who do you think you are? By now you may have guessed I'm speaking ironically and have nothing but good things to say about what you do. Life cereal do not change a thing.

I use my little "Bat Man" baggies, and then write on the baggy. Works great.noxorc wrote:how do you homes keep track of your motors?
I've got a suite of them.. all sorts of colors.. and I try to remember. BUT..
I've tried to tag the colored end with some marker, but after time, that's just as useless.

hey namuna you messed up the zipzaps. the yellow one used to be called "nos". the red one was the "turbo".
why didnt you just use a power supply to test? i know its not gona be exactly the same as a battery, but it will be more consistant.
if you want ill have my friend look around for a "general radio strobe tachometer" for you. its lab grade but it can only be used for wheel rpms. also the transfer between the gears isnt 100% efficient so id adjust 2-5%.
nice job on eliminating everyones hype.

I did start off with using an AC Adapter to power the Motors...I bought those Universal AC Adapters from Coby (in the other thread). It's supposed to be selectable from 1.5v to 12v.
But at the 1.5v the piece of shit still was cranking almost 4v! What the hell's with that?...I knew something wasn't right when I tested my 2.6 motor with it and I was getting results in the 50,000rpm range!
So I was reduced to having to use a battery.
Goddamned RadioShack bastards! I hate their naming convention, especially when they switch shit around. From now on I'm just going to refer to their shit by color.

Crap, I gotta redo all the RPM tests.
The 'trick' is to use an encoder wheel the SAME diameter as the driving wheels. Since I don't know the specific calculations to compensate for the encoder diameter (the bigger the diameter, the less RPMs will register), I'll have to settle for using a wheel as close to the regular wheels as possible.

Nice work on the tests.
I know this was an old post but was just wondering if you still test the newest motors?
I know I just picked up a few of the King 4.2 pro (blue ends) and just wondering what they tested at(if they have been tested).
Aswell what are everyones thought on this motor? I use it in my LXX 2 speed and it runs ok.
I tossed it in my ZZ and ran like shit(think theres a prob with my zz though).
I dont have any tomy's yet but when they arrive I will put her in them aswell. Oh I did tosss it in a clone but didn't notice a different between the clone 3.0?(white from LXX) or yellow one from the ThunderFighter clone but that could be due to other thingsa guess.

I think I read somewhere that the 4.2 pro(from TE in perfection box) was good for 2 speeed cars. I wish everyone used the #'s as when I am looking around to see whats outthere some sites use names and its hard to really tell what they are really selling untill you get it and try it out
