How To(kinda): Birds ultimate "plug & play" rx
I really aint sure where I should stick this, being that it is a mod that applies to any vehicle that has a removeable reciever... ie, 1/18th up to whatever, on-road, off-road, crawler... electric or nitro... whatever... like I said, alls that's required is having a ride(well, rides, because its purpose is to make multiple rides easily manageable with a single radio system...) with traditional electronics...
So you peeps with stocker "integrated" esc/reciever combo crap can stop reading now...
So, basically everybody is hip to the old tried and true "velcro the rx to yer chassis" mod, right? Well my take on this mod takes it a step further... sure it's convenient to unplug your servo and esc, yank your velcroed rx off the car and... well, wait... ya still got the fun task of unthreading your antenna, and then rethreadinig it into whatever other ride your about to whip... and that just sucks.
Solution: The ultimate "plug & play" rx setup...
Items needed: a reciever(duh!), a piece of lexan or other suitable thin strong plastic(I prefer zipzap packaging, true to the pimp modder game, yall!) roughly the size of your rx footprint with at least an inch of overhang on one of the sides(I prefer using a short side), an aluminum antenna tube holder(I use a 3Racing one that came with my old mini-t chassis, but I've seen them sold stand-alone by GS Racing), some good quality double-sided(servo) tape, and, of course, the obligatory velcro...
Here's an example of the GS Racing mount... http://www.gsracing.com/web/page.asp?pg ... 68&id=1163
So, what you gotta do is cut your plastic "base" into the shape of your rx, leaving about 3/4 to an inch overhang on one of the sides, drill a hole in the overhang for the antenna mount to mount to, servo tape that deal to the bottom of the rx, thread yer antenna, cap it, add yer velcro to the bottom of that... badda-boom, badda-bing, you're set....
My personal setup(shown) uses an Associated XP rx(they come in the RC18 series of vehicles, are really small, and easy to come across used... racers always chuck the stock radio shit first, perfect for a basher like me who could really care less if I'm on AM lol...)
I have this setup mated to an iWaver digital tx running Xmod xtals... so, yeah, I got 10 model memory, and a rx that I can swap from ride to ride in mere SECONDS... I truly think I have the ultimate low-budget, user-friendly, basher radio setup.
And ya saw it on bitPimps first!
