My weekend at the 1/18th Indoor Offroad Races @ RC Madness

Post by sg219 »

I gotta say it was a GREAT weekend!! I had so much fun and learned a shitload more than expected. Met people that I've only read about. Did things I would have never thought I'd do. Broke stuff that I never thought I'd break. It's most definatley the best thing I've done since getting into RC approx. 3 years ago, starting out with Bits and ZZ's.

Now I find myself going to the 1/18th Nats. :8P:

Day ONE:

Thursday March 30th, 2006

The drive up:
Left Pittsburgh around 4:30pm. The drive up went well, no constuction or bad weather the entire way up to Enfield. Spent approx, $60 on gas on the way up. Got to the hotel about 12:45am. Checked in, chugged a beer, and crashed for the night. I made sure to arrive at the hotel ready for the next days races. So all I had to do at the track was repeak some batteries.

Day TWO:

Friday March 31st, 2006

Practice/Tuning day. No compitition.

Wake-up with some crappy hotel coffee about 9:00am. Got stuff together and headed to RC Madness for a day of, "I don't have a clue." Let me remind you, I've NEVER placed foot on or near a race track, with the exception of betting on the horses.

Arrive at RC Madness about 11:15am. Went inside to see what needed to happen, and rapid fire some questions at Chris (track owner). The man looked incredibly tires and the shop was caotic and the smell of traction compound and burning motors was in the air.

I found out that I needed to first find a pit spot and mark it 'reserved for' to keep it for the whole weekend, set-up, and check into the race schedule and when I would be racing and the details I needed to get ironed out before I race.

I started to walk arount the track which was surrouned by racers and sponsers. Walking around, there were pit spots covered with buggies, trucks, parts, chargers, tools, pizza, Red Bull, coffee cups, lights, tool boxes, and pit towels that looked like there could be a National Racing Anthem written about them.

Everyone was smiling, wrenching, joking around, chillin' and BSin'. It was what seemed like a racing Utopia. As you look around it was as if a gigantic cluster bomb of RC passion exploded in front of me.

I made my way around the track a found a great pit spot, directly behind the drivers stand. Great spot to watch the races and get to see everyone that raced.

I found myelf next to the track regulars. Racer Tony, Tony (Racer Justin's GranPap), Racer Dave, and Racer Rinaldo(track champ in 1/18th, I forget which class). All were extremely helpful and friendly. I can't say enough how great these guys were. Anything, absolutely anything they could point out, suggestion, answer, or whatever else you could throw at these guys, they helped me with.

Got my pit set-up and then took a walk around to get familiar with my surrondings. Bathrooms, Red Bull machine, Race lineup sheets, and the shop.

I then got my truck ready to practice. The only entry I had was my MLST, I didn't know what to expect, so I didn't enter my Mini-T.

I was using my Spektrum DX3, so there was no need for a FREQ clip. Can't say much about practice, except for...I didn't break anything, nor make it all the way around the track with out crashing.

There were three jumps, a long straight and some rumble strips or bumps, in my opinion, it was a very technical track. Espically for a hardcore basher that just likes top go whereever the hell he damn well wants to drive. It was really tough to even keep my truck going straight, let alone pull off the jumps cleanly, in such a small space. (Small space, as opposed to parking lots and fields.) With the help of some corner marshalls, I made a couple of laps.

Made it thru practice day with no really problems. I had some adjustments to make for the next day, but nothing really major. Finished up about 6:45pm and went to grab some grub, and find some local beerto try and to take back to the hotel.

Day THREE:

Saturday April 1st, 2006

First day of qualifiers. 2 rounds. 26 races x 2. Aprox, 10 racers per race.

Wake up bright and early, 5:45am, gotta be at the track about 7:00am to warm-up and get a little practice in. Grab some Mc'Ds and roll.

The smell of racing was in the early morning air that changed from a crisp, beutiful New England morning to traction compound and stressed motors, with a step thru the front door.

Get to the track a little after 7:00am, and the place it already jumpin'!! Full swing, as if it never closed, like Vegas. Got to my pit and started to get ready for a full day of racing. I have 2 qualifiers to be ready for, about 3 or 4 hours between my first and second rounds. So I had plenty of time to work with and calm down. I was nervous, but very organized. So it wasn't that bad. I'll be racing in the 4WD Mini Monster Big Block Brushless class. Pretty much, anything goes. Race #24.

I hear race 22 called and over with and race 23 getting started. I double check my truck for anything that might be loose or not race ready, everything looks good. I walk over to get my transponder and number sticker. Install the transponder and sticker, and wait for race 23 to wrap up. Races are 5 minutes, so not much time for errors.

My trucks ready, my hands start to sweat and my heart starts to race. I get a little uncomfortable. Drop my truck on the track and start to warm-up and get into position. With sweaty palms and my anxeity levels at an al time high, the pre-race announcements end. It's race time!!

For qualifiers, its not like a typical race. Not everyone goes at one time. You go when your number is called, and you race yourself for your best times, not the other racers. My number is called, #2 GO, I took off all slow and granny-like. I was overly cautious of wrecking or loosing control. I didn't make it too far, before I popped a ball cup and then cracked a diff case and diff case plate, and my radio (DX3) started acting goofy too. I didn't finish a lap.

I found out that others were having the same problem with their Spektrums too. When you crash, the RX would shut down and give no response. You would have to switch the RX on/off to restart. It sucked. The rumor is that the static from the carpet was screwing with the Spektrums signal. But it would only happen when you crash or have a small impact on a wall or jump. I don't know, but it sucked to have this problem all weekend. It really hurt my performance. Not that I was all that great, but it sure didn't help the cause.

Ended up finishing 9th out of 11 racers in the heat. Those number might be off slightly due to some confusion on my part, but thats what I remember.

Qualifier Race 2 for me had a much bigger impact on my weekend. (pun intended)

I took off about the same fashion as the last rtace, slow and rediculiosly cautious. Made it thru the first jump, came down the long back straight and lost control and SLAMMED into the wall. Ouch, and double ouch!! Inside RC was all over this spectaculiar crash!! (Keep your eyes peeled if you got the channel that carries Inside RC, and please send me a copy if my crash does show up on TV.) I broke an upper front arm, diff case, bend a hinge pin, and shattered a wheel. Front end fully disabled, however I didn't pop any of the ball cups I replaced with the 1/10th scale parts. Given, I didn't finish the race, nor a lap.

After each race, you need to take you truck to the "Tech Station" for them to look it over for anything illegal. I took my truck over and they got a good laugh out of what I broke. So did I.

My day was done. I needed to hit the shop for another pile of parts to get my truck ready for the next days events. I will need to almost rebuild my truck completely.

Left the track about 7:00pm or so. Went back to the hotel and got to work on the truck.

I did the following Saturday night....

-Replaced the front diff case and drive gear that got chewed up
-Replace the ripped apart CF 3 Racing diff plate that I installed the day before, with another stock plate
-Replaced the front lower hinge pins
-Replaced the front upper arm
-Went back to the stock shocks
-Changed out the oil in the shocks to 70wt oil
-Re-installed both sway bars
-Changed the gearing, went down to a 22T pinion and 50T spur
-Broke down the rear end and re-assembled, needed to check
-CA'ed my front shattered rim
-Retouched the edges of my front tires with some CA to help prevent snap rolling

I also broke a rear carrier but I forget what I was doing when it broke, I think it was during open practice between the first and second rounds.

Then I painted a body for my Mini-T. I was hoping to be able to throw it down during practice, but never got the chance.

It was a busy and long Saturday. Every minute of it was FUN!!!

Can't wait for the next day to come.

Day FOUR:

Sunday April 2nd, 2006

Final day of qualifiers. Racing Mains are held. Trip home.

I got to the track about 8:30am, due to the damn time change. I wanted to get there about 7:30am.

Got there, and set-up my pit space and waited. My final qualifier was race #24, so I had plenty of time to chill.

I pretty much just roamed around and watched the races, Bird and USAtorque were there, so I watched their races and helped out whenever I could.

My race time came up and like before, my palms started to sweat, but I did feel a little more comfortable, than the day before. Got my truck on the track and started to warm up, I made a full lap!!

The race is about to start and I'm as ready as I'lkl ever be. My number is called and I'm off. I started this race a little quicker and with alot more confidence than the first two qualifiers. I hit the first jump and rolled, I continued on and ended up finishing the race and NOT breaking anything. I completed 6 laps!! Not a bad improvement.

I believe that the changes in gearing and shocks had a tremendous impact on the way it handled during the race.

It felt good to complete a few laps. None were flawless or crashless, but nonetheless, I made it around a few times.

Inbetween the final qualifiers and the begining of the Mains, they handed out some door prizes. They went thru the racers names about 2 1/2 times. I got a Mamba USB link, Novak Nimh 750mah Micro battery pack, United Sport 42 1100mah micro battery pack, Robinson Racing 19T aluminum pinion, Parma body repair kit, and a set of T-Bone racing MLST front and rear bumper set.

Now I had to wait for the Main Race scedule. I made the "B" main. Race 11.

For the Mains, everyone starts at once on the back straight in their assigned position, from pole to last, according to the qualifier results. I ranked in at 9. I made a lap and then started haveing an issue everytime I went over the jump that leads into the straight. Eveytime I'd jump it, I'd roll, then I'd need my truck switched on/off to reset the Spektrum, it happened almost every lap in the SAME spot. I didn't finish the race due to a minor crash during the final lap. I got 7 or 8 laps in this time. I finished 6th out of 10 entries.

I then hung around for the rest of the days races and watched USATorques A main race and Birds B main race. Birds B main was the crowd favorite race of the day. Shawn from Castle Creations pushed Birds Mini-T across the finish line by hand. You had to be there.

Said thanks to a few people for their help and good bye to Torque about 7:15pm and took off for my return trip to Pittsburgh. Droped off Bird, who went straight to work at 3:30am, then I got home about 3:15am.

I hope I didn't leave any info out. I just wanted to share my FIRST race experience and how much FUN I had the WHOLE time!!

I will say that, if anyone has the chance to enter a big race like this, DO IT!!! Don't worry about the races so much, just absorb as much info and enviroment as you can.

Word can't describe how much fun the weekend was and WILL be next year!!!

Can't wait to get back to Enfield.

Now I am insearch of the next closest track to race 1/18th at, so I can be more prepared and tuned for next years races.

I have whole new look on RC racing and what it takes to be the best. its not just money, its patience and practice. Lots of practice.

I'm glad you enjoyed the post. I hope others will find it a good read too.

I learned alot this past weekend. The biggest is, the amount of FUN you can have and still be competitive.

Alot of people think that being competitive needs to be "cut-throat". Thats so far from the truth.

I learned to pay attention to details that I would have normally would have NEVER even remotely thought about.

That is crazy racing a national event for your first racing experience.

The only time I ever TQed a race was the week before a national event, The Cactus Classic, because there was already out of towners there, and I already knew the track.

I didn't enter the race the following week, but I went to check it out, and it was insane, all these RVs and trailers crammed between 2 strip malls, Pro Line had a big fancy tent set up in my spot where I pitted every week, and Team Losi was set up next to that. It was crazy.

That sucks about the Spektrum, its cool though, because you can use that as an excuse. :-o
Seriously though, I've found the trick to at least placing in the front of the pack, is to just not wreck. Turnmarshalls can really suck sometimes.

Same here! You emphasized emotion and surroundings into your descriptions, makes me feel like I was there.

An "R/C Hobbies" store (part of a chain i guess) just opened near me. Rumor has it that indoor/outdoor tracks of 'professional' grade or whatever are opening in a couple months, also near me.
I'm almost there, almost ready to make a 1st purchase....man, I can imagine this stuff is shitloads of fun.

Anything show up on Inside RC yet?

RC Driver has the results and about 5 pages on the race.

You won't see me or Bird in the listings. Neither of us made an "A" main.

USATorque55 made an "A" main. :-o

That was a great read about your experience at the Nats! I raced in the Mini Monster Big Block class too so we were probably in the same heat at some point that weekend.

Its about time!! I've emailed them atleast 10 times about it. The last time was about 2 weeks ago and they said it was going to air next week. (So they weren't screwin' with me.)

Can you send it to me via CD, DVD, upload it somewhere?

I don't have that channel.
