i was wondering with my tmaxx and an old 2.5 if i could switch from 20 percent to 15 percent nitro fuel with only retuning it and not having any problems. i ask this because ive run out of 20 and i have 1.5 gallons of 15 thatl never get used any other way.

Nope.... I mean you could, but it'll run like shit. The general rule with nitro %s is you can go up, but not down.
If it's just a basher engine on it's way out, go for it, but if you can wait for more 20%, I'd do it.

When switching fuels and in this case the Nitro content proportion changes you should tune your engine. This explains your overehating.
When the tuning is right and the engine not faulty it should not overheat.
