All about RCs in the air. If it's a plane, a helicopter, a ufo, or anything else that flies in the air - it goes here.

Zip-Air?

Post by Clint »

Found a styrofoam micro plane(Air Hogs E-charger) at Walmart for 8 bucks today.

The plane consisted of a capacitor, a torquey black ZZMT style
motor and a gearbox.. Ripped that out
and tossed in the guts from my propo ZZMT. It also seems to
run the prop well with a 4 cell zzmt board, but the novak spy runs
it better. I think a lipo+fetted ZZMT board will do perfectly and will be lighter than the propo parts.
Already have a servo setup laid out, but havent hooked it up yet.
The plane only needs 2 channels.

The little sucker _really_ wants to pull. Unfortunately, it's way too windy outside right now and I'm not launching it indoors.
So anyway here's a teaser.

Dude, come on man - it was 8 bucks, fly that bitch indoors.
You could setup a Top Gun scene (not the volleyball scene either lol).

A Novak Spy would be overkill. Castle Creation's Pixie 7P would likely work a bit better. (CC also makes Mamba equipment.) I personally own a 7P, and love it.
What's the AUW of the plane? I've got some spare radio gear, and would like to make one.
You can get 3.4 gram servos, BTW, for 18$ at LightFlightRC.com.
Lithiums are great!
Triple the speed...
four times the duration....
And they explode if you crash them too hard!

The electronics you are lookin at using, especially the spy, are rather heavy for that airframe.. It will have to fly extremely fast to stay up. Here is a plane I am currently working on, has a much bigger wing area, mucho less weight, and a bit more power too. Less weight and a bigger wing mean slower flying, and a better chance for a small size airplane.

Wing is a bit under a 12 inch span, with a long chord. Made from a fiberglass rod and tissue. Tail feathers are foam with a bit actuator and magnet. Fuse is a overbuilt balsa stick. Motor, gearing and prop are similiar to what you are using. Battery is a 130 mah lipo, and rx will be a fetted bit board. End weight should be 17 grams, or a bit over half an ounce.

Dont want to sound like a total asshat, but yeah..

for a hard landing.

:looks at my auw and your auw:
*hmm*

Edit:
Just bought a 60'x4' pallet of fan fold foam. It didnt come any smaller and they wouldnt let me just buy a few sheets. Farkin Lowes. Also grabbed a

OK got this to actually fly straight and the balance seems good. Needs a slightly larger prop, but I'm happy it's working well. :)

carbon fiber shaft (xmod driveshaft stock)
old 30k rpm xmod motor/direct drive prop
eflight 10amp micro esc
2s 340mah lipo
gws pico rx
fan fold foam wings

now onto some controls.

My wife has rheumatoid arthiritis. Her ankles are shot, so we bring that along
when we travel.
