55 turn motors, are they really that great?
I'm not doubting on lathe motors, by why is 55 turns sooo popular?
I've been watching them grow increasingly scarce over the last month as this segment of the hobby blows up. I'm not really in the mood to go tracking onw down, so I'm considering my options and wondering, why not 35, 45, or even maybe 65 turns? I'll probably never get much farther than running around my apartment, so 35 or 45 may just suit my purposes better, they on the other hand, I'm not geared as low as others may I want 65 turns to balance it out.
Basically, I'm wondering, there's a pretty drastic difference between like say 14 and 19 turns, how big of of a difference is there between 45, 55, etc.?

55t is the best of power, torque, and speed.
I think the reason it became so big, is that it what was availble via the lathe motors. Than as things grew, so did the turns.
I run a 55t Integy in Prometheus and a 65t Axiom in Anubis. They both perform well, I don't see a big difference, except for a tiny bit of wheel speed. But I think that has more to do with what pinions I'm running in each truck.
Here is some place close to you that has a good stock of products most of the time.
This is where I got my last 55t Integy. I also like the Axiom 65t I have too.

Oh looky, the Crawler Store got more in. Are they in AZ? I read something somewhere that gave me the impression they're from here.
Well I just can't decide. My sensible side is saying, go with the proven motor everyone else has, but my gut instinct is saying, get the 45. I think I might be happier with just a little more speed.

I didn't save the package, but I'm pretty sure they are really close to you.
I think you should get a 55t and play with pinions.

Well, ultimately I had to be me, and I went with a 45. Stiil not sure I made the right choice, but it just felt right.
I really wish I ordered from TCS, I'm really curious to see exactly where they're at, but they only carried the RCGuy diff lockers, and I like the looks of the Maximizer ones better. They look to be beefier and lighter at the same time, if that makes any sense. So I ordered from Stormer.

i ran a 45t in my juggy 2 with 40series rims and tyres and it went good, salled out when the wheels were in huge ass holes that should have snapped diffs and axles
just running off a 7.2 3000Mah pack got around 50min runtimes
maybe throw a lipo in there and should get awsome times and a bit more punch

I wish I could afford lipo and a charger for it.guerd87 wrote:

Runtime is not a big issue for me. I'm getting decent punch from the 2/3As. I'm looking into getting a batch of KAN1050s. I hear they have really good punch, and I can get a batch for about $25, build me 4 packs cheap. That's the plan for right now. Someday I'll get me an Ice or some other good charger so I can use any batteries I want.
Your comment on the 45t motor made me feel better about my decision. That's basically the compromise I'm using throughout the whole truck. That's why I left in stock parts like the upper 3-link, and the flexible front steering arm. I'd rather have a minor failure and lose a comp, than break something and loose a comp. That's if I ever went to comp, its all about the fun at this point.
Welp, got my motor, and got it installed last night, but they messed up on my order, and sent me 14mm wheel adapters instead of diff lockers. I'm sure Stormer Hobbies will take care of me, but it still kinda bummed my weekend out, because my kneaded erasers are getting broken in, and my diff action is loosening up. I'm pretty sure when I try out the stronger motor this morning, they're gonna start spinning pretty freely.

Half on topic, but you set me up for my kinda off topic rant.frizzen wrote:uh, sorta half on topic...
What size caps should be run on an Integy 55t motor?
</newb mode>

Many motors come with caps. I was thrown off when this one arrived without them. My wife works across the street from HobbytownUSA. I'm always sending her in there for stuff they apparently don't carry. I told her, if they can't help you, then I'll never send you over there again. Well they just said, "Why don't you go to Radio Shack?" Only problem with that is the RS in the mall don't carry electronic parts anymore. So now I can't call my wife at work to have her swing by the hobby shop, and I ended up just stealing the caps off a stock Mini-T motor. Why is it I have story after story of the LHSs acting stupid? I want to support my LHS, I really do, but...
Anyways, these Trinity caps are identical to the ones I used, with the "103Z" marking.

These Orion ones are a little smaller and neater looking, and are rated at .1 microfared. So I'm assuming the others are like .103, since I'm not an expert on the markings.

I pretty sure any small cap, with a similar rating will work.
Getting back on subject, when I first tried out the 45t, I thought, "Holy crap that's slow!", but after I got it on the rocks, I felt like it had enough power at half throttle that I didn't have to gun it to get over every obstacle, and started to realize the advantage. It never stalled on me, but as I suspected it had plenty of power to break my diffs free. I should get my diff lockers today, so we'll see how it performs with the diffs locked up good, but I think the 45t was a good starting point for me, because if the 55t was any slower that might have been a shock to my system.

The validity of using motor caps is not even a subject for debate. They absorb brush noise that could cause interference, and have no effect on performance. It kinda like wearing seat belts, not everyone does that either.SHAUN wrote:I don't run caps. I don't think I have seen anyone running them actually.
Also note that many newer motors have built in caps, like the stock Saturn 27t motor in the Wheely King for instance. You don't see them, but look inside, they're in there. The reason the Integy motors probably do not include them is because its a "lathe" motor, or in other words not intended for RC.

I put them on all my motors to decrease the chance of glitching.crazydave wrote:The validity of using motor caps is not even a subject for debate. Some of the newer motors do have them pre-installed in the end bells.
They are worth installing.
I'm not sure about AM/FM radios differences with caps, but I would assume that AM would have more issues than FM. Then there is the Spektrum radios, which I don't think would have any issues with or without caps. However, I still put them on.
