moding a new bright and have queastions

Want to talk about micro boats or micro planes? How about trains, slot cars or submarines? Well you can do it all right here. If it's another hobby and it doesn't fit in one of our other forums, then it goes here.

moding a new bright and have queastions

Post by davewithx »

I picked up a New Bright monster truck for my three year old ( he's almost four). It's about 18th scale and takes four "AA" batteries. None of the controls are proportional. The steering sux in this thing. It uses a small motor that is has one gear reduction and then acts like a rack and pinion setup. It doesn't have enough torque to turn the wheels on carpet. He gets mad at it cause he can't drive it like daddy's trucks. I hooked up a six cell battery to and the steering improved but it is too fast for him now.
Would there be a way to have the six cell but limit the speed? Or would I be better off changing the steering motor over to a higher torque motor like an old xmod 1st gen motor?
Any other ideas are welcome.

4 cells isn't enough, 6 is too many... Try making a 5 cell pack?

To limit speed on a 6 cell,
You could throw a suitable Resistor on the motor, more ohms is slower, but it's a really hack way to do it.
You could add more gear reduction to the drive motor.
You could find a motor with more turns, or wind your own.

Or you could go all out and drop a cheap entry level RX, ESC, Servo into it and let him learn about controlling something proportional.
Jack of all trades, master of none; yet often better than master of one.

I had thought about most of those. I like the five cell idea. I need to go to rat shack latter anyways I'll have to pick up a battery holder.
I was going to do the cheap proportional stuff but I don't want to put to much work into this truck just yet. when he gets better at controlling this I will ether get a better grade truck or just upgrade what he has.

If you're using alkaline, switch to NiMh rechargebles.
You've probably done that already, but 4 rayovac IC3 batteries (they still sell those?) would do the trick nicely.

I hate to disagree with you Maxx..... but running 4.8 volts on a vehicle designed to run 4 AA Alkaline batteries (6 volts) doesn't cut it. 5 rechargables puts it back to that voltage range.

I feel your pain, davewithx. My kids (2 girls) want thiers to drive like my "big one".

Sometimes I'll set the Novak ESC to the "training mode" which allows full controll with the exception of 50% of the top speed. Or I'll set the JR transmitter to a lower throttle limiting setting. At least then, they get to drive daddy's car, even though there isn't as much momentum to break the things I usally would break.

Oh yeah, I have only let them drive my Revo a couple of times.... and that was at a huge grass field..... no obstacles to smash into. I don't know what you have as hobby grade rigs, but try letting him drive yours in a big area while you have him on your lap. At least then you could take controll if needed.
Just a thought.

I have a slash and a mini lst2. I have set the slash to training mode for him, but being three his hands are to small for the controller. I think I'm going to just let him drive it as is for now, and get him a nicer one at Christmas and then mode the cheep one with hobby grade goodies.

honestly i wouldn't mod a new bright with hobby grade electronics because in no time all your gears will be striped out

I was thinking more like just using the body for a scale project for me. But I'll just let him use it till he breaks it. It shouldn't take to long he already drives it off the front porch (about two foot drop) so that it can jump like daddy's truck  he's just like me.
