Yeah they are attached on the inside man. See my "Bitching' Gloria" thread in flossin' for pictures detailing this.

And yes they can be fit to a lowered car. As you can see the 2000GT-R is a pullback which has reduced shell hight and clearance and it all fits fine in that shell no sweats.

Actually dude I don't use those 3V cells. I use a little PCB that converts the 1.2V from the car's battery to 5V for me. So yes this does decrease the runtime but with my DIP Switch mod, 150mA+ batts and a custom charger it ain't much of a problem. You can see this PCB in the photos in my "Bitchin' Gloria" thread.
