1-evening RX7 (more like 3 evenings, now)
Well, I'm sorta gettin' the hang of painting with nail polish...
still rough, but getting better. I wrecked a few that I'd spent
some prep time on, so I decided to do minimal prep work
on this one... I hate that license plate deal, so that had to go.
And, the stock wing is too bulky for my taste, so I ground
those big-ass pontoons off as well. Tab lowered it as far as
I could without too much internal grinding... just a little in the
rear wheel wells.
It's crazy maskin' & layin' a second color 30 minutes after the
first. So, the 3 body colors went on, then I painted the wheels,
then I did the detail work while the wheels dried. Let it all sit
for an hour, then shot the clear nail polish, which I gotta play
with more... it dries so fast that it's hard to lay a wet coat. I
think I can rub it out, though. Also, next time I'll leave the
windows masked all the way through... I unmasked this time,
and shot clear over the whole car.
I hate seeing all the mold lines, but fuck it... this is a bang-it-out
driver. Finally I feel like I can drive a custom-painted car. It's
nice not having a couple of months or more tied up into one paint
job. Plus, once I get the process down better, I'll spen a little
more time at the prep stage. I have a feeling this one of those
"never go back" kinds of things... though, enamel paint sure lays
down nice.
Anyway, here she is...

I've thought about it, but it's the difference between a trip to the automotive parts store and $6 or $7, or a trip to the grocery store and $2.crazydave wrote:You guys are getting some really nice paint jobs with that nail polish, but have you thought about trying automotive touch ups in the little brush on bottles? I'm think it might be much thinner than nail polish. You should have no probs getting a kick ass job with the airbrush.
I have a bottle of Toronado Red touch-up paint from my old VW Scirocco that I'm saving for the day I turn an AE86 into a Scirocco.
oh yeah, nice car hue! Looks like that nail polish is laying down just fine, whaddaya complaining about?

Nope, the roof is silver... I forgot to mention I was going to make some decals and do it up as a race car (graphics and logos & whatnot along with the multi-colored paint scheme)... I decided against it, for now, in order to keep the process minimal until I'm more comfortable with this paint. I'll probably go back into it with decals, but I might just start something new.chrome wrote:Not sure I get the paint theme. It's painted well and the laydown does look good, but I don't understand the color choice there. Is the roof painted green too?
Same here... plus, the cool thing about the nail polish is that the metallic colors have a really fine flake... then there's those glitter colors.SuperFly wrote:I've thought about it, but it's the difference between a trip to the automotive parts store and $6 or $7, or a trip to the grocery store and $2.crazydave wrote:You guys are getting some really nice paint jobs with that nail polish, but have you thought about trying automotive touch ups in the little brush on bottles? That's what I thought you guys were up to. Too bad you hate Walmart, Duplicolor is $3, and for me just as convenient as the grocery store. ( I can get my Hot Pockets their too.SuperFly wrote:I've thought about it, but it's the difference between a trip to the automotive parts store and $6 or $7, or a trip to the grocery store and $2.crazydave wrote:You guys are getting some really nice paint jobs with that nail polish, but have you thought about trying automotive touch ups in the little brush on bottles? Yeah, no shit. I'm only suggesting the automotive touch ups because he was bitching.oh yeah, nice car hue! Looks like that nail polish is laying down just fine, whaddaya complaining about?

(... and because I want to hear how it works out for my own reference.

Not to turn this into a nail polish thread, but the thing that is tricky is the drying time. While the super-fast drying time is cool so you can work fast, it causes problems when airbrushing. It starts drying as soon as it leaves the nozzle, and because the airbrush is turning it to mist and blowing it 2-6 inches, it starts drying before it hits the car. This causes it to orange-peel.
Thinning it helps, but finding the best thinner and the best ratio is tricky.

I'm just gonna stick with the lil brush provided.
You guys could go to one of them vietcon nail huts and ask them what mix they use. This cat I work with goes with a vietcon chick that works at a nail hut. I could prolly ask him to ask her about the mix and thinner type they use for airbrushin nails.

I was thinking about the same lady. (We all have one down the road, don't we?), but it hadn't occurred to me to ask her for advice.
I do know when she did my wife's nails once, she used a dremel to buff it out when she was done. That's after just minutes. So that stuff is drying way faster than even my laquer I like to use.

Excellent Hue!
I've been practicing painting bodies with emerald green and silver.
Then I see this, now I'm gonna go cry.
I love that green with the silver.
